Freddie was born on July 27, 1946, in Laoag City, Philippines to the late Blas and Blasa Asuncion. As the youngest of eight children, he made his grand entrance into the world already destined to be both the baby and the boss of the family.
He graduated from Northern Luzon Teacher’s College, and soon after, by divine appointment, he met the love of his life, Florie, at a military ball. Their love story began with music, dancing, and God’s perfect timing. Freddie went on to serve faithfully in the Philippine Army for eight years, including time with the Presidential Security Unit at Malacañang Palace, where he proudly guarded the President.
After relocating his family to California, Freddie worked tirelessly in many roles: nursery worker, U.S. Postal Service employee, and armed security guard. No matter what uniform he wore, his calling was always clear. He was to be the protector, provider, and servant-leader.
Freddie and Florie shared 53 beautiful years of marriage, marked by faithfulness, patience, laughter, and the kind of love only God can sustain. He is survived by his wife, Florie Asuncion, his eldest daughter, Jeanette Kingsley and husband Brian, with their children Frank and Grace; and his youngest daughter, Joy and husband Jonathan Smith, with their son Josiah. He is also survived by his siblings Luz, Nelio, Ireno, and John, along with many loving relatives, extended family members, and dear friends.
A man of many passions, Freddie loved gardening, building and fixing things, cheering on the 49ers, watching WWE wrestling, keeping up with Filipino news, and somehow mastering both Facebook and tic-tac-toe like a true digital warrior.
Though he endured many medical challenges over the last two decades, Freddie never lost his strong will, his humor, or his unwavering love for his family. His faith carried him through every season of hardship and every moment of joy. We rejoice knowing he is now fully healed, fully whole, and fully alive in the presence of the Lord…likely already organizing Heaven, fixing something, and keeping everyone in line.
Freddie leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, faith, and devotion. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who were blessed to know him.
