On March 31th, 2024, James Russell Place, or “Rusty” as he was known by all, closed the final chapter of his life on earth. Rusty was born on June 30, 1957 in Sandusky, Ohio and grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was a decades-long resident of Flagler Beach, Florida where he was known and loved by so many in the community. He also considered Catawba Island, Ohio and the Lake Erie Islands as his second home and was a frequent visitor. Rusty spent his teenage years at Gem Beach on Catawba Island where he established life-long friends, with whom he remained close until the last day of his life.
Rusty was an enthusiastic fan and supporter of the Miami Dolphins. He was the founder of “Fin Fans of Flagler”, a Dolphins club that, under his guidance, raised funds for various charitable organizations. Rusty was also a supporter of Flagler Beach’s Junior Lifeguard Program. He involved many local businesses with the program to help families in need and assist with hurricane relief efforts.
Rusty had copious passions in his life and he loved bringing people together with his immense personality. He was a motorcycle enthusiast, spending 25 years working for American Honda. Rusty also loved everything to do with classic Volkswagen busses from the 60’s and he had a unique flair and creativity for “Rustifying” his surroundings. Rusty’s greatest joy, however, was his daughter Megan. He would light up with pride whenever he talked about her. He was so proud of her accomplishments and of the adult that she had become. Rusty impacted the lives of countless individuals and had many, many friends. He will be sadly missed but joyously remembered by all of those fortunate enough to know him.
Rusty was preceded in death by his parents Oliver and Virginia Place, and his brother Rex Place, who was also a long-time resident of Flagler Beach, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Kim (Clark), daughter Megan Place, granddaughter Otto (Kozich), brothers Terry, Roi and Dusty Place, step-sisters Colleen (Granick) and Brandi (Newsome).
A celebration of life is planned for June 29, 2024. Details are to follow through The Flagler/Palm Coast News-Tribune and Friends of Flagler Beach.
