Juan was born on September 11, 1927, in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, the son of Francisco Morales and Angela Vega. He was born and raised in Puerto Rico before moving to Washington, D.C., in the 1940s, where he worked as a barber then shortly after as a baker and ice carver at the historic Mayflower Hotel. In 1972 he returned to Puerto Rico, where he owned and operated a successful restaurant. Later, 2 additional restaurants were opened. The original remains in operation today under the care of his stepson—a testament to he’s hard work, dedication, and love of the culinary arts.
Juan was a man of many talents and passions. He was an accomplished chef, baker and ice sculpturer. He enjoyed singing, playing the guitar, accordion, and any other instrument he sought to learn. He loved listening to music, and working with his hands. Whether it be building small Christmas houses out of wood for presents, or merely tinkering with anything that came to mind.
A man of deep faith, Juan found comfort in his daily readings of the Bible and was known for his infectious smile and joyful spirit. He also loved playing games, including cards and dominos—occasionally bending the rules just a little—and above all, he loved to sing.
Juan is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Gloria Rojas Morales and his children, Rosa Johnson, Carmen Palermo, Juan Morales, Jr, James Morales, Luz Morales, Pablo Valdepena (stepson). Preceded by death, Jose Rojas (stepson). His loving (8) grandchildren, (5) step grandchildren, (9) great grandchildren, (4) step great grandchildren, (2) great-great step grandchildren and (1) great great-great grandchild.
