Born on October 24, 1945, in Manhattan, New York, Mary was the daughter of the late Thomas and Katherine McManus. A dedicated and compassionate nurse, she graduated from Kings County School of Nursing in 1965 and earned her RN license at the young age of 18. She began her career working on the medical units at Downstate and Kings County Hospitals, later serving in the Inservice Education Department. Mary eventually transitioned into medical review, applying her clinical expertise to evaluate hospital cases for insurance until her retirement.
On November 6, 1971, Mary married the love of her life, Robert Bernard McCarthy. Together they raised two beautiful children in Airmont NY, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and strong values. In 2006, Mary and Robert relocated to Ormond Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed their retirement years together.
Mary had many passions—gardening, traveling, history, politics, and collecting china—but nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her cherished family, especially her children and beloved granddaughter, Gracie. She was also an avid conversationalist, never meeting a stranger, and always having a story to tell, sometimes more than once!
She was preceded in death by her brothers Thomas, James, and John McManus, and sisters-in-law, Rita, Nancy and Maryelizabeth. She is survived by her devoted husband of 54 years, Robert Bernard McCarthy; her children, Brendan McCarthy (Kendra) and Katherine McCarthy; her granddaughter, Gracie McCarthy; her brother, William McManus; sister-in-law, Christine McManus; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Mary will be remembered for her warm heart, strong spirit, and lifelong dedication to caring for others. Her legacy of love and compassion will continue to live on through all those who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to SmileTrain.org or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
