Born on February 10, 1961, in Birmingham, Alabama, Phil was the son of the late Thomas Houston and Joyce Eloise Mize. He graduated from Ashville High School in 1979 before proudly serving his country in the United States Army as an Airborne Artillery Trooper in Special Forces.
Following his honorable discharge, Phil moved to West Virginia, where he worked in the coal mines as a welder. He dedicated his entire professional life to the mining industry before retiring and relocating to sunny Flagler Beach in 2011.
Phil loved the outdoors and embraced everything nature had to offer. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, spending days at the beach, and listening to music—especially his favorite band, The Allman Brothers. He often described himself best in his own words: “I’m a simple man… loves outdoors, mountains, the beach… good blues, dogs and BBQ, and my favorite, The Allman Brothers.”
He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Glen Mize, in 2018, and his son, Philip Randall Mize Jr., in 1993.
Phil is survived by his daughter, Brooklyn, and her husband, Joshua Bell; his grandchildren, Abel Ean Noriega, Kaelyn Brook Noriega, and Kaiden Izaiah Crawford; his aunt and uncle, Dr. & Mrs. Philip R. Veazey; as well as many loving cousins and extended family members.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Phil’s memory may be made to The ARC of Volusia.
He will be remembered for his deep love of family, his adventurous spirit, and the simple joys that brought him peace.
