Born on December 29, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bob was the son of Karl and Elli Jokinen Kainu. He was raised in Cheverly, Maryland, and graduated from Bladensburg High School. Following his graduation, Bob proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country for two years.
After his honorable discharge, Bob began a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the fingerprint division before answering a lifelong calling to public service as a firefighter in Washington, D.C. He devoted 20 years to the department, retiring with distinction and the respect of his colleagues.
Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose quiet strength and steadfast nature left a lasting mark on those who knew him. He was an avid sports fan—especially of the Washington Capitals—and enjoyed simple pleasures such as family gatherings, good conversation with his dear friend George (Lorraine) Green, and cheering for his favorite team. Bob was Lutheran by faith and cherished the time spent with those he loved most.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeannette Lee (Crockett) Kainu, whom he married on September 7, 1956; two daughters, Valerie (Steven) Dorman of Palm Coast, and Brenda (Devin) Sarver of Maryland; four grandchildren, Jason (Rachel) Dorman, Monica Dorman, Craig Sarver, and Colton Sarver; two great-grandchildren, Shane Dorman and Ava Dorman; special cousin, Jack (Antionette) Eckstrom, Godson, John (Claudia) Eckstrom, and cousins, Karl (Theresa) Eckstrom, Janis (David) Eckstrom and Glen Eckstrom
