Carmen Lydia Tomkalski, born on July 4, 1931, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, at the age of 94, surrounded by her loving family in Las Vegas, Nevada. A firecracker in spirit and heart, Carmen’s life was a shining example of resilience, compassion, independence, and grace. She was cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her—a delightful spark whose presence lit up every room.
Carmen was the beloved mother of Doreen Ann Gatanas, Gary Figueroa, Elaine Polakovich, and the late John Figueroa. She was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, who found immense joy and purpose in her family. She helped raise eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, each of whom she held dear.
Affectionately known as “Lilly,” by her family and friends, she lived a life full of remarkable talents and unwavering strength. She was admired for her beauty as a professional model, being an avid doll collector, a hardworking woman, and a true matriarch who led by example. Carmen taught the women in her life the value of independence, perseverance, and financial wisdom. She lived her beliefs—raising four children on her own, working multiple jobs, and buying her own home—all with grace and determination.
Carmen expressed her love through thoughtful, handmade creations, famously crocheting wool blankets and knitting personalized gifts for her loved ones. Her warmth filled every holiday, where she delighted in volunteering and giving back to her community. She loved to dance and brought joy wherever she went, often becoming the life of the party.
Her legacy is one of strength, love, and unwavering kindness. Carmen’s independent spirit and generous heart will be deeply missed. Though she may no longer be with us in body, her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
