Daniel Francis Lynch, age 92, a wise great grandfather with an Irish wit and gift for story telling passed away peacefully on October 15, 2021, at North Shore Hospital. His loving children, their families, and our friend Stacey were privileged to care for him at home during the last months of his long and wonderful life.
Dan was born on March 1, 1929, the only child of Daniel and Catherine “Nana” Lynch (nee Sullivan) who had immigrated from County Kerry. He grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn and attended Holy Name grammar school and St. Francis Preparatory HS in Brooklyn. Dan married his bride, Catherine T. Lynch, on October 3, 1954. She predeceased him on September 2, 2018.
At his 90th birthday celebration Dan said his 8 children were blessings to him and Catherine. But Dan’s family, friends and acquaintances are the ones who feel blessed to have known this generous hard working union man and Korean War Veteran who defied stereotypes. He taught us how to age gracefully, take good care of yourself and pursue interesting hobbies. He continually amazed with anecdotes reflecting his knowledge and curiosity about current events, food, nature, history, travel, engineering, technology, sports (Mets fan) and people, using his iphone and laptop to stay in touch, keep learning, and shop online to the very end of his life. Although Dan didn’t take an alcoholic drink for the last 56 years, he loved a party and gamely attended a family wedding this past Labor Day weekend.
Dan is pre-deceased by his daughter Maureen Lynch Ludwicki, son Firefighter Michael F. Lynch (L-4, Eng-54), and son-in-law, John (Stymie) Rafferty.
He is survived by his son, Daniel J. Lynch (Anne Marie Schettini); daughters: Kathleen Martens (Joseph), Bernadette Rafferty, Mary Coster (John), Rosemary Pumilia (Thomas), Barbara McManus (Christopher); daughter-in-law Denise (Bertrand) Lynch; son-in-law Henry (Hank) Ludwicki; and grand-children: Marcelle Martens (Christopher Gephardt), Julia and Liam Martens, Kerry-Anne Rafferty, Kathryn Meara (Daniel), Michael Rafferty (Gina), John Coster (Christina), Andrew and Daniel Coster, Christina Coster Marchesani (Brian), Nicholas and Olivia Pumilia, Emily and Michaela McManus, McKenzie and Skylar Lynch, Morgan and Henry (Hank) Ludwicki, Michael and John (Jack) Lynch, and Elizabeth Keane; great grandchildren: Madison and Reese Meara, John (Jack) Coster, and Madeline Marchesani; and his brother-in-law James McGuire, sister-in-law Rosemary O’Connor, cousin Maureen Burke, and their families.
A visitation for Daniel will be held Sunday, October 17, 2021 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Quinn - Fogarty Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11358. A funeral mass will occur Monday, October 18, 2021 10:45 AM at Notre Dame Church, New Hyde Park, NY 11040. Committal service to follow at Mt St Mary's, Flushing, NY.
