Dorcia Marinee Vendryes (née Malcolm) was born in the parish of Kingston, Jamaica on December 1, 1955; she was the second born of 6 siblings. Dorcia was affectionately known as Dee. She’s known as a carefree spirit that thoroughly enjoyed the natural beauties of Jamaica. Whether it was running down the hills, falling, and scaring her legs or throwing pebbles at a wasp nest and running. She enjoyed cricket and skipping as a school age child. She developed a passion for fashion as a teenager and sewed many hip outfits using her mother’s foot sewing machine. A good dancer- lover of music and life.
She was known as a great emotional support with her forthrightness and the right dose of practicality. She had a sense of humor that you would immediately relate to. And, she was a very loyal friend.
Once she left Jamaica in 1969, she immigrated to Brooklyn, New York. In Brooklyn, she completed Thomas Jefferson High School and briefly attended Hunter College before settling in Toronto, Canada in 1974. By 1975, her family had saved up for the purchase of a home. Her love of medicine led to attending Seneca College of Nursing in Canada and graduated as a Registered Nurse. Immediately after writing the examination for her nursing license in Toronto, she returned to NY to marry Delroy Vendryes in 1979. The marriage produced two children who survived her: Lauren Jean-Paul (née Vendryes) and Brandon Vendryes. She later divorced.
She worked at Kings County Hospital and then Parkway Hospital as an ICU nurse before moving on to Visiting Nursing Service of NY as a case management nurse. She had a true passion for her profession and retired 3 weeks before her passing. She worked hard for her family. She passed away January 21, 2022 in the comfort of her home.
She is fondly known as the grandparent that loves to treat her grandchildren (Theo and Carl) with plenty of sweet treats. She was predeceased by her younger brother Barrington Malcolm born in Kingston, her father Burchell Malcolm born in Bethel Town, Westmoreland, and her mother Luleta Eunice Malcolm (née Blackwood) who was born in Browns Hall, St Catherine. She was survived by her five siblings: Jacqueline Marjorie Palmer, Weida-Marie Malcolm-Smith, Marcel Wentworth Malcolm, Maxwell Houston Adenauer Malcolm, Garfield Bankcroft Malcolm.
Proverbs Chapter 31: 14-18
She is like a sailing ship that brings food from across the sea.
She gets up before daylight to prepare food for her family and for her servants.
She knows how to buy land and how to plant a vineyard,
and she always works hard.
She knows when to buy or sell, and she stays busy until late at night.
