Ellen Ann Schiavone, 85, of Flushing, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 7th, surrounded by love. Born on September 17, 1939, in the Bronx, NY, she was the devoted mother of John Thomas, whom she raised singlehandedly from the age of seven with boundless love and unwavering support.
Ellen lived a life deeply rooted in family, faith, and community. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and strength, as well as her love of crossword puzzles and stuffed animals.
Born to Charles and Catherine Carroll, Ellen was a proud graduate of Aquinas High School (Bronx, 1957), Pace College (New York City, 1961), and St. John’s University (Queens, 1982), where she earned her Master’s in Business Administration.
Her professional and community achievements were many. She founded Pace University’s Newman Club, joined Price Waterhouse as one of the early female general audit staff accountants, was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma international business honor society, and was invested in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She joyfully retired in 2000 as Associate Controller of the City Center of Music and Drama, the financial arm of the New York City Ballet and New York City Opera, after 18 years and countless performances.
A dedicated member of the Diocese of Brooklyn’s Catholic Accountants Guild, Ellen served as St. Kevin Parish Trustee (2014–2024), President of the Parish Council (1977), decade-long treasurer of both the Parish Rosary Society and the Auburndale Chapter of the AARP, and an active member of numerous parish committees since 1974.
Ellen loved to travel, attending weddings, christenings, funerals, and nearly every party to which she was invited. In addition to visiting nearly all of the United States, traveling by plane (Concorde), train (Eurostar), automobile, and cruise ship (Queen Elizabeth II), she journeyed across Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Europe, and even the former Soviet Union—listed alphabetically here, but not in practice!
Her penmanship never wavered, honed through countless birthday cards (and checks!), travel postcards, and Christmas greetings. She valued education, passionately supporting her son’s academic journey while remaining a loyal advocate for her high school and college alma maters.
She was welcomed into eternity by her husband, John (1974); her parents; her siblings, Charles (Ann) Carroll and Agnes (Michael) Bergin; and too many Carroll, McDermott, Young, Lebrizzi, and Schiavone cousins, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to count.
A visitation for Ellen will be held Thursday, February 13, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Frederick Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11358. A mass of Christian Burial will occur Friday, February 14, 2025, 9:45 AM at St. Kevin's RC Church, 45-21 194th St, New York, NY 11358. A graveside service will follow at Mount St. Mary Cemetery, 172-00 Booth Memorial Ave, New York, NY 11365.
In her honor, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
Her love and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
