He attended Brooklyn Tech before moving to Long Island with his mother, where he graduated from West Babylon High.
He then enlisted in the US Army, and was stationed in West Germany driving trucks, an experience that made such an impression he reminisced on it often, even 50-plus years later.
In 1967 he and Nora Doherty married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan. They settled in Bayside, Queens - where they remained, living in different locations - until present day.
He attended Hofstra University on Long Island on the GI Bill, earning a BA degree. A few years after their wedding their only child, Pamela was born.
Jim worked in Manhattan and on Long Island as a proofreader, copy editor, and editor at local papers and at various publishing houses. In the mid-80s he chose to work freelance - a/k/a he began working from home - which allowed him to take on projects that he enjoyed editing and which forged relationships that sometimes lasted decades over many projects.
Jim was a critical thinker, he enjoyed deep discussions on history, politics and the ‘unexplained.’
He had been a fan of the NYTimes Sunday crossword puzzle (a love he passed on to his daughter), watching Jeopardy and reading books on astronomy.
His wife, Nora, an RN and Professor of Nursing was his dedicated caretaker for over a year, ultimately keeping her promise to “keep him home and out of the hospital.”
In the early morning of Thursday, February 25th Jim died peacefully in his sleep, in his home. He was with his wife and daughter.
Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nora; his daughter Pamela and favorite son-in-law/good friend Ralph Hipsher; his sisters Mabel McClintock (Richard) and Jan Brant (Steven); nieces and nephews.
Visitation is Sunday, February 28th 3-7 pm at Frederick Funeral Home.
Burial is on Monday, March 1st at Calverton National Cemetery, Riverhead, Long Island.
In lieu of sending flowers, donations can be made in Jim’s honor to the Parkinson’s Foundation (parkinson.org).
