On December 12, 1918 John D. Merkerson, Sr. was born in Milan, Georgia to the late Idelia & John Merkerson. He attended Morris Brown College and served in the Army as a T. Sgt. during World War II. During his youth the family migrated to Hastings, Florida where he met and marries Louise Porter On November 30, 1942 and later moved to Corona, Queens, New York. This union of love gave birth to three sons John Jr., Anthony and Howard and one daughter Tonya. He was employed by "The Travelers Hotel" into the age of 70 as a Chauffer and Bell Hop. After his retirement he focused on knowing what was happening in the news, this was major to him...he would sit and watch the news channels all day long and then would also read the newspapers daily from front to back! John lived a great life and enjoyed "Family Times". He was affectionately known as "Pop" to all that loved him. He had a vigorous memory and would sit and share stories about his life experiences with his family and friends, especially his Grands and Great-Grands! They all meant the world to him and his most cherished moments were when they all came together.
On Tuesday, January 26, 2016, GOD saw fit to him home. Don't think of him as gone away, his journey has just begun. Think of Him as Living In Hearts of Those He Touched For Nothing Loved is Ever Lost and Pop was Loved so Much! He now joins his wife Louise in Heaven and leaves to Cherish his (3) sons John Jr., Anthony and Howard, and (1) daughter Tonya; (2) Daughters-In-law Anita and Crystal; (15) Grandchildren Marrima, Jamal, Nikki, Schanta, Erik, Evan, Angela, A.J., Andre, Sammy Lumar, Jamie, Diamond, Shelly; (19) Great Grand-Children; (1) Sister Julia Mae Boynton and a host of Relatives and Friends
Lovingly Submitted,
