

Naomi I. Garner, 97, of Flushing, NY passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 11:21pm in the Cypress Garden Nursing Home, just two months shy of her 98th birthday. Naomi was born on October 31, 1919 in Waverly, Georgia to Alexander and Rena Belle Powell. Naomi grew up in Durham, North Carolina. She is predeceased by her five siblings Waymon, Amelia, Susan, Alexander, and George. Naomi was gifted a trip to New York City from her sister Amelia upon her graduation from Hillside Park High School in Durham, North Carolina in 1937. She fell in love with the city, and has been a resident of Queens, NY since.
She met the love of her life, James Hector Garner in the early 1940s; with whom she had four kids: Leslie, George, Stephanie (Diane), and Robert. Naomi had another son, Michael, from her first marriage who predeceased her.
Naomi was loved and adored by many people and was affectionately called Granny by her family. Naomi is survived by her beloved family consisting of sons, Leslie Garner of Columbus, Ohio, and Robert Garner and his wife Michelle of Far Rockaway, New York; daughter, Stephanie Garner of Falls Church, Virginia; 6 grandchildren Timara Garner, Jaimee Garner-Smith, and Tomeka Holley and her husband Wallace of Columbus, Ohio, Adrienne Thompson and Douglas Thompson of Falls Church, Virginia, and George (Poppy) Garner of North Carolina; 5 great-grandchildren, Keenan and Nichelle Smith, Avery Garner-Greene, and Brooke and Bianca Stephenson; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Darius Bullock and Tydrick Slater, Jr.; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Naomi’s funeral will be held at Frederick Funeral Home on Friday, September 8, 2017 with an 8:30am viewing and 9:30am service at 192-15 Northern Blvd, Flushing, NY 11358. A graveside service will follow at Flushing Cemetery at 11am.
