Meg, my family lived across from you at 33 Ballad Lane. I found Tom's obituary on line recently & we just wanted to let you know you & your family have our deepest sympathy. Remembering Tom's singing, brings back many good memories of Ballad Lane.

"I remember meeting Tom at a rehearsal for a musical.  At a crossroad in my life, Tom  convinced me that teaching could be the finest profession on earth. Twenty eight years have passed and I am still running around barefoot all day teaching 100 dancers how to chasse.  Thank you Tom for caring enough, and for sharing your talents with all of us.  You introduced me to some of my dearest friends from I.S. 125Q, Steven, Don and Irene.  My fondest memories include the trips to the Met to see the beautiful Ballets, and the privilege of sharing many dinners and nice evenings with the Newby Family.

My fondest memories of my tenure at I.S.125,  center around Tom and the wonderful productions he directed at our school! He touched so many young lives with joy in his productions, everyone who wanted to participate was  given a role in the production!  Master Teacher, Mentor, Thespian, loving husband, loving father, loving brother, great friend, 
proud and loving grandfather He enriched all our lives!

I am humbled by the comments about my beloved brother, Thomas. He was indeed a special person. Thank you all for your support.

A great voice has been stilled.  Certainly the masterful baritone voice displayed in so many performances, but also the voice of a very warm man with a great heart, a wonderful friend, the voice of first hand experience of the golden age of singing at the Met in the 1960s, an expert collector, connoisseur and authority on recordings  of live operatic performances through the entire era of audio and video recording, an erudite teacher of English throughout an entire career.  The great voice of a truly great man, for all his relatively modest circumstances.
His Teyve in Fiddler on the Roof was one of the great interpretations and probably the greatest interpretation to date.  Unlike Zero Mostel he truly sang the music, not simply talk it, and his characterization was far more detailed.  That is just one example of how favorably he compared with all other interpreters.
He was a wonderful, insightful, and supportive friend in a crisis, always truly there when I needed him most.  I met him through our wonderful and blessed friend Matthias, and through Tom I came to know his wonderful family, such a great blessing in his life.
In the last 10 years I saw all too little of Tom and his family as I recovered my voice and my life from  childhood trauma while working my day job 7 days a week.  Having just emerged from that process with a strong baritone voice I am starting to perform with  having been assisted by a wonderful voice teacher Tom himself  helped me find  I had just contacted him saying that I wanted to see him and sing for him in appreciation and celebration. I am heartbroken I can now never thank him in that way.
But I am far more heartbroken for the loss to the whole Newby family of this still young and mentally vibrant man, knowing he meant more to you than I can possibly imagine.  I hope and trust God will comfort you with all the memories of all the years with him you had the joy and privilege of having. I fervently pray that God will so grant.

Thank you for being a wonderful teacher, mentor,. You were a g gifted man in the arts. It was a privilege and honor to have connected with you again in my adult life.

My deepest sympathy to the family. I had him as a teacher at JHS 125 as well.  He did a special class in Opera and changed my life forever!  Today I was at the Met hearing/seeing Mozart's Ideomeo, 4 hours of musical bliss and thought of him and how grateful i was for what he gave me.  I see him standing in front of the class talking passionately about he last days of the great Metropolitan Opera house.  I felt a part of history and his light and passion affected my path in life. Tom Newby was my beloved English teacher from 1974-1977. He instilled the love of Shakespeare in me and to this day, I remember his passionate reading of Julius Caesar and find myself repeating Mr. Newby's remarks when teaching it to my own high school students. Mr. Newby was a favorite teacher of so many. He touched so many lives and his memory will live on. I feel extremely blessed to have had him as an English teacher, as a drama coach and director, and as a friend and advisor. He and his wife welcomed my class into their home and celebrated our graduation, and made us all feel so special.
My sincerest sympathies goes out to his family. I hope you will take comfort in knowing that Thomas Newby was loved, admired and inspired by so many.

I was one of his students at JHS 125.   He had a wonderful teaching style, and I always looked forward to attending English class.  He truly cared about us.  He orchestrated excellent stage productions, too.  I will never forget his booming voice and love of opera.  My thoughts and prayers are for his family and everyone whose lives were enriched for having known him.

Tom was a cherished friend and artist .... i remain deeply saddened at his passing as do we all

i know Thomas fought hard and believed in God's good grace .... he is now resting in peace with the Lord while we are blessed to have had him with us for as long as we did.... he truly was a very very special soul

Tom was one of the finest men I have ever known, and an irreplaceable friend for nearly 20 years.
     I cherish the shared laughter, the music, good food, and mutual respect we had between us.  He can never be replaced.
     My sincere condolences go out to all his many loved ones and other friends.  I will never forget Tom, "amici in vita e in morte" [a quote from Verdi's FORZA DEL DESTINO, the first opera Tom saw at the Met, with his grandfather, in 1960].

 Your father was one-of-a-kind.  He seemed to have touched  many lives even outside of his family.  I was so happy to get in touch with him after 35+ years of not seeing him.  I'm  very thankful for the reunion a few of us had.  When Facebook came into action, connecting with him was one of the highlights. When I think back to my junior high school days and the Spring showcase as being one of my fondest memories, it is Mr. Newby that clearly is rememered and adored.  Nobody can fill his shoes. May he RIP  and condolences  to his wife and family.

I am in total shock and devastated to have learned of Tom's death.  My heart goes out to all the Newby family, my dear friends for many, many years.  I shall always have the memories of our singing concerts we did together for over thirty years as well as our close friendship.  Rest in peace dear friend.

I am very sorry to hear this news. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Newby Family during this time. I hope you are comforted by all the good times you shared, your Dad's kindness to all including the children of the neighborhood, and the fact that his beautiful voice comforted so many people and souls over the year's at St. Kevin's. He will forever be in that heavenly balcony singing and watching over you all.

My sincerest condolences. He was always such an "up" person, having faith that he would get better. We've emailed for years and he'll be missed. I'll light a candle for him before Mass.

My sincerest sympathies to the Newby family.  I had the distinct pleasure of playing piano for many of Tom's shows at JHS 125.  He also assisted me by directing a show at the Nassau school district I moved on to.  He was an inspiration and will not be forgotten.

To the Newby family, 

As one looks upon the 233 wonderful pictures, they can see that your beloved Tom certainly held the secret recipe for living a good life. It seems like just yesterday he was saying, " I WANT SOME GRAND CHILDREN!" GOD never disappoints! All I can say is thank you friend, you fought hard and earned a pain free seat in Heaven, BRAVO Tom!  I will see you soon.....(Meg, get some rest....you put the love and meaning in wife!!)

To the Newby family: We feel and share  your loss of such a wonderful man and teacher. His passion for life and love of the arts was not lost on some of his students. We will smile when we hear the name Shakespeare and recall his famous rendition of Lady Macbeth's monologue of "out damn'd spot". He will forever be my favorite English teacher.

He will be missed by me more than I can say. I was so fortunate to have worked with him, been mentored by him, been directed by him and then been befriended by him. He was a most wonderful man and I grieve with you Meg and your family at this terrible loss. Rest In Peace my friend and sing so that all of Heaven can hear you. Always love and gratitude for the gift of your presence , support and friendship in my life!

He was the finest, kindest, gentlest of men. Never more shall we see his like again. It is our holy task to accompany you with prayer on the final stage of your pilgrimage to Paradise. Your arrival is set for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then, dearest friend, return the favor by praying for us before the All-holy Mother-of-God and her Divine Son. Raise a hymn of suppliant praise to gladden the very angels themselves by the sound of your mellifluous voice. We are grief stricken that we shall hear it no more until we hear it again in the choir of heaven!

Dear Cousins,  Our hearts are breaking at your and our loss.. He is in heaven singing with the angels and arguing with them whether Jussi Björling was the best tenor.

To Tom's family, my deepest sympathy and wish we could be there now to share your sorrow.  Tom will always be in my mind  every time I here opera and that is almost everyday., R.i.P. Victor Moné, Florida.

Although we've lived on the same street for many decades, we don't know each other personally, however, we know of Mr. Newby's incredible singing voice. One of the main reasons I wanted to attend midnight mass at St. Kevin's was to hear him sing. In fact, hearing him sing was THE reason to attend. He had an incredible talent. I'm very sorry for the family's loss. May he rest in peace.
