Allyn Udell

Allyn Padawer Udell, wife of Dr. Ira Udell for over 47 years, and mother to Erin, Jared and Zach, passed away Wednesday, April 25th surrounded by family and friends at North Shore University Hospital at Northwell.

Born Allyn Sue Padawer in Birmingham, Alabama on February 28, 1951 to Arthur and Evelyn Padawer. Mrs. Udell was raised in a changing South. She attended Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, where she met and married her husband, then a first year medical student at Tulane, when she was a sophomore.

Allyn and Ira settled on Long Island and raised three children in Manhasset. Ira took on the role of Chair of Ophthalmology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center/North Shore University Hospital and Ophthalmology Chair at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Allyn worked at the family jewelry business, London Jewelers, for over 30 years. Her enormous customer circle shared their most exciting moments with her and she reveled in their happiness. Selling a gorgeous piece of jewelry for a special occasion to make someone happy, made her happy.

Allyn served as President of the Shelter Rock Synagogue Sisterhood and was a devoted member for over 30 years.

When diagnosed over 21 years ago, Multiple Myeloma was a death sentence. With Ira’s medical know how and Allyn’s extraordinary fight, Allyn saw bar mitzvahs, weddings, grandchildren, parties and became both a test patient for every new drug for Myeloma and a champion for survival. Even during the most difficult times, Allyn never complained, always smiled - said everything was fine and was more concerned about others. Over the course of her treatment at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Medical Center, Hackensack University Medical Center, Mount Sinai Hospital and Northwell, she was attended by an army of fabulous, innovative medical minds.

With her signature red spiked hairdo and her ever present Hello Dollys dessert, Allyn was beloved by an enormous circle of dear close friends whom she adored.

She is survived by her devoted husband Dr. Ira Udell, her children Erin (Leigh) Minsky, Jared (Riki) Udell and Zachary Udell, her grandchildren Alex, Avery, Austin and Essie, and her siblings Jeff Padawer, Randy Padawer and Mark and Candy Udell.

Funeral services will be held at Shelter Rock Synagogue, 272 Shelter Rock Road, Roslyn, NY Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 11:00 am.
