Judge Dennis Lebwohl, 78, died at home with his wife at his bedside after a sudden short and cruel illness. He is survived by his loving family, his daughters, Beth and Dara, their mother Linda, sister Isla Leefe, cousins David and Paul Lebwohl, his stepson Michael Pasinkoff and partner Patrick Fedor, his brother-in-law Harold Michlewitz, his nephew and niece Aaron and Maria Michlewitz, sisters-in-law Katherine Marshall Riley and Ellie Marshall, nephews Brian Marshall-Riley and William Derek Riley and Kelly, and wife Debra Michlewitz. He profoundly loved his blended family.
Judge Lebwohl’s life reflected his passion for the law, justice, and fairness for all. He began his career as an attorney working for Legal Aid in Bronx County. Subsequently he served as an Assistant District Attorney, an 18B attorney, a law secretary for various Civil and Criminal Court judges, and finally as a Family Court Judge in Queens County. His extraordinary work ethic was legendary. His Cross Island YMCA community knew he was the earliest of the early every morning. He read voraciously. He was a great traveler who relished experiencing the diversity of the world. His love of music ranged from Bach, to klezmer, to Irish sessions, to American standards and jazz, to everything showcased on WQXR and WFUV. He relished his new found friends discovered through his discovery of playing bridge. After his retirement from the Queens Family Court, he studied art and produced wonderful acrylic works, including a sunset evocative of Manhattan Henge and Afternoon Ride with a barely discernible solitary bike rider on a path reminiscent of a bike trail in Cape Cod, a place he loved. His passing is deeply mourned by his New York City, Texas, and Massachusetts friends and family. We shall not see his like again.
