A Mother's Day Sonnet in Honor of Lillian White

When I consider how you've spent your life,
Denying self and choosing to stand back,
As daughter, sister, mother, worker, wife,
Compelled, at times, to say that “white” is “black,”
You still excelled in ways that do not shout
Your merits from the rooftops (very sly!).
Your stories, jokes and songs and wit come out
As “throwaways,” that might just pass us by.
Belatedly, I'll say how much I owe
You for my sense of what is right and wrong,
And how a punchline really ought to go
And how a housewife writes a bluesy song.
So Happy Mother's Day, and many more.
