Margaret Anderson, age 98, of West Hempstead, New York passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, September 28, 2021. Margaret was born in East Rockaway to Myrtle and Roy Houghton along with her younger brother Richard. The family moved to West Hempstead a few years later where she went to school and church and remained there for the rest of her 98 years. At 18 Margaret started working for a family owned professional photography shop which was located on the Mitchell Field Army Air Base in Uniondale during World War II and was soon left to run the office when the owners went off to war. Since part of her job was to use a typewriter with ink ribbon she soon acquired a nick name of "smudgy" since many of the documents she handled had her mark on them. When her husband Norman built one of his boats he even named it after her: "Smudgy II". She was married to Norman for over 40 years until his passing in 1985. She met "Jerry" a few years later and they were engaged for over 30 years. Margaret is survived by her 3 loving children Richard (Barbara), Janice (Barry), and Eric (Diane), 11 Grandchildren, and 8 Great Grandchildren. Margaret loved to travel and has visited countries from Morocco to Australia but she was most fond of Hawaii. She also loved to sing, especially in church, but she had been in a number of choral societies including the "Sweet Adeline's" that also gave her the opportunity to travel and perform. She was always active in church and missions and up until a few years ago with the Salvation Army.
Margaret lived a very very full and happy life. She was very independent and still driving until 4 years ago when a hospitalization for a hip replacement started the beginning of her slow decline into dementia. God's hand was obviously on her and blessed her and others through her. He provided a wonderful, Godly women by the name of Briggita who stayed with her day and night until God took her home. Even the timing of her passing was perfectly orchestrated so that those who knew and loved her had many years to ease the pain of loss and gradually say goodbye.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.forestparkchapel.com for the Anderson family.
