I'm a former student of Dr. Kohn's and I'm very saddened to learn of his passing. He was an excellent professor that really and truly cared about his students and went above and beyond to help them achieve their goals. He was a wonderful storyteller and had the gift of gab. I know that he left a lasting impression on so many that he encountered and he certainly made one on me. He was inspiring. I'm so glad I visited with him before I graduated in '23 and told him how important he had been in shaping my views and goals and making my time on campus memorable. I really don't know if I would have made it to the finish line without his support. You are missed, Dr. Kohn.

While it has been 2 years since your passing, I think of you often when I look at the gift you brought me from the Czech Republic. You often thought of others selflessly and with great passion. I will miss you my friend and hope that one day, we can meet again.

I had Dr.Kohn in my last semester of college at VSU in May 2023. He was such a light and honestly helped me see the bigger picture for graduate school . He was so excited when I told him I got in and always supported me. He will be missed and forever in the hearts of his students.

I was due to take Dr. Kohn's class this semester after hearing so much about him, and I was excited about it. I am saddened that I did not get the chance to experience such a wonderful professor. Many prayers to the family. Well done, Dr. Kohn.

I had the privilege of taking two of Dr. Kohn’s classes. This was years ago but I’ll never forget him telling me I was smart, in his own words. In a world where professors have so many students and often do not learn names, I was impressed when he remembered my last name. I felt like he was the only professor who understood me. He wrote my letter of recommendation for graduate school. Once again thank you Dr. Kohn. I shed some big tears about this one. You are missed. 

I first met Dr. Steven Kohn as an undergraduate student at VSU. I took classes with him and worked closely with him conducting undergraduate research. He had a great impact on both my life and academic career. He was one of the main reasons I decided to specialize in gerontology in graduate school. I later came back to VSU and was able to work with as a fellow faculty member. 

He helped make me a better researcher and ultimately a better person. I can honestly say I wouldn't be the person I am today without his guidance, mentorship, and friendship. I will miss him greatly. 

Dr. Kohn will be missed! I had the pleasure of taking his Theory of Motivation course. How cool is it to learn and apply  psychological theories and watch classic movies? “I believe that to a certain degree, a man makes his own luck.”  Gregory Peck, 12 O’Clock High. I also had the pleasure of working for him as a graduate assistant. He had a love for gerontology and would visit Birmingham and UAB from time to time for conferences. I’m sorry I never linked up with him while I lived in Birmingham. He touched many lives and his generosity was incredible. I can only hope to be as generous as he was throughout my life. Praying for his family and friends during this difficult time. 

Steve was my colleague. He loved students! He would do anything to help them to succeed. He lived for the study abroad program in the Czech Republic. It was an honor to work with him. He will be missed terribly by his students and colleagues. I miss him as well. RIP dear Steve!

I was fortunate enough to have Dr.Kohn as my faculty director when i studied abroad in the Czech summer of 2016. He was very kind and and professional and was so helpful and concerned when i became ill during the trip. After the trip, i took him for 2 more classes before i graduated. It was in his senior seminar class that he advised me to look into a career in social work and consider University of Georgia for graduate school and look into a graduate assistantship. I am a first generation college student and didn’t know what to do after graduation. I took his advice and graduated from UGA’s Master of Social Work program in 2020 (debt free thanks to a graduate and assistantship)  and am now working at a great job as a social worker. Dr Kohn, thank you so much for how you impacted my life and i’m sure the lives of others. You will be missed by many! ♥️

When I heard the news of Dr. Kohn's passing, my heart broke. He was such a genuinely kind man with such a big heart. Much of my undergraduate journey was made whole because of him. I first met him studying abroad in the Czech Republic with my sister and it was such a joy to get to know him. I took every single psychology class to follow with him because I enjoyed him so much. He got me into the psi chi honor society and he wrote my letter of recommendation for graduate school.  Dr. Kohn left such an impact on all of his children. I am praying for his family in this difficult time. 

I wish I could find more photos/ videos but I do not have the phone that I took with me.  Dr. Kohn was such a joy to meet on this trip! He showed us all of the good food and souvenir spots. He was knew the Czech Republic well and made the trip fun! Every time you saw him on campus he would make it a point to speak and ask how you are. Dr. Kohn would give you the shirt off his back, truly a humble and kind man. 

My first encounter with Dr. Kohn, was as a VSU CAMP student going on the VSU Czech Republic Live and Learn Study Abroad. The first time I met him, I recall just how sweet, kind and friendly he was to everyone, even those who were just meeting him for the first time. I can’t thank Dr. Kohn enough for the many memories that he shared with us during and after the study abroad. We kept in touch and he was more than a professor- he was a friend. A dear friend to everyone. His door was always open to everyone, and he was always there to listen and understand  if you ever wanted to talk about something. By far one of the most sweet, understanding and kind friends I’ve ever known.

Dr. Kohn was such a sweet person. I was a student back in 2010/2011 and really enjoyed him as a professor. My condolences to his family and friends. This is a truly a lost for the Paychology Department at VSU and the past and present students.

I will miss Steven, his insight and dedication to students, no matter was is a Psychology class or his beloved study abroad program at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic. His program, "Live and Learn in the Czech" has been a staple in the exposure of his students from Valdosta State University to learning, life and the world. 
Visits to Auschwitz, to the home-museum of Dr. Freud, to the history of Krakow or Prague has always been about expanding not just the intellect of the students, but also their growth as good people. 
We spent many hours during the 18 years I have been at VSU  talking, discussing. joking.  Good buy, Steve!

My sincere condolences to Dr. Kohn's family. I hope you will receive comfort in knowing that he was much beloved by his students and coworkers. I will greatly miss his daily visits to my office and our talks. He had such a kind and caring heart and had a passion for the success of his students. The summer Study Abroad in the Czech Republic brought him so much happiness to give students these unique learning experiences.  Dr. Kohn had a very generous heart and a gentle nature and he will be sorely missed and remembered with great fondness by all who knew him. 

I had the great privilege of getting to know Dr. Kohn during my time at VSU. He cared deeply for his students and was always willing to lend an ear and offer a word of advice when needed. I remember fondly our interactions in the hallways of the psych department and often think lf him when I see anything Czech related. He has left an impact on the lives of countless students, colleagues, and friends and will be dearly missed. He was a wonderful professor and an even more amazing  person and I wish his remaining family peace and comfort during this difficult time.

Steven Kohn was a good colleague and friend. He offered great insights into the issues of the day and always had time for conversation. He contributed greatly to the VSU community. Students, colleagues, and I will miss him.

I have known Steve as a good friend and colleague here at VSU for many years. He was such a truly nice, caring and genuine person. He cared so much for his students and worked so hard coordinating the Czech study abroad program each year. He loved going over there and all the friends he had made. The department will never be the same without him. I will never forget him and he will be greatly missed. 

Working for VSU I got to know Dr. Kohn through the Psychology Dept. He was so very gentle and kind. One year he took a group of students to the Czech Republic and brought me back a gift, without me even asking. It was a beautiful cloth angel that I've kept hanging from a cabinet - from the very day he brought it back. He will be greatly missed by those of us who recognized his beautiful heart. 

If kindness was a person, it would be Dr. Kohn! He embodied that one quality and so much more as a VSU professor. 

I have so many fond memories of attending his lectures and working with him during my professional career at VSU. 

To Dr. Kohn’s surviving family, thank you sharing such a treasure with us! To Dr. Kohn, thank you for every encouraging word and some truly thought provoking conversations. You will be truly missed!

Steven was a generous colleague and friend.  He had passion for his students and all he touched at VSU.  Always showing genuine care and compassion, he will no doubt be missed by many. I will forever be grateful for his guidance and friendship. 

Steve was a dear friend to me, my wife and granddaughter.  He was the kindest, gentlest and sweetest person I have ever met. To the family of Dr. Kohn,
My daughter traveled with  Dr. kohn to Europe this summer. Just weeks ago they were together. During her time of need he was there for her,  he cared for her and treated her like family. I cannot express how grateful we are to have known him, albeit brief. We are all shocked and saddened by his passing.. And we send our deepest sympathies to Dr Kohns family.

Steven is truly missed by so many of us here. He was the sweetest, most generous person - the best example of what it means to teach. I’m so lucky to have gotten to work with him and see how much he thought of and cared about every person in his class and around him. I don’t think even he knew how well-thought of he was. Rest well, friend.

I had Dr. Kohn several times at VSU. He was one of the kindest, intelligent, and passionate people I’ve ever met. I feel so grateful to have learned from him. We frequently emailed and talked even after I graduated. His wisdom and love helped put me on the path to continue my career into mental health. Dr. Kohn was deeply beloved by his students and community and I will always cherish his memory.

I had the privilege of going on the Czech Republic study abroad trip this past summer. Hanging out with Dr. Kohn on the trip was a pleasure and a honor. He was a kind, self less, funny and always had an abundant of facts to share with us. I’ll never forget the memories we created!

Dr. Kohn was one of the most influential people in Valdosta. He was a wonderful man, who always looked out and did the best for his students, as well as his coworkers and colleagues. Dr. Kohn was one of my professors at VSU, and my experience in the psychology program would not have been as fantastic as it was without him. He was always so kind and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and study abroad in the Czech Republic. My month in Europe with him and my classmates will always be remembered - from surprising us by buying small treats to letting us out of class early to explore to his generous extension of our class due dates and to his knowledge and wisdom. Dr. Kohn, you are dearly missed. 

Dr. Kohn was one of the best professors that I have had the privilege of knowing. He always made class fun and interesting with his thoughts and references to help his students retain the information and enjoy class. He helped me a lot in the past few years in terms of being a wonderful professor, advisor of Psi Chi, and guiding me in my journey to graduate school. I am forever grateful for having the opportunity of knowing him, and for all of his education, advice, and help that he has given me. 

I am so sorry to his family and friends for their loss. He was a great man.

I was one of Dr. Kohn's students at VSU. I had the the privilege of being able to go to the Czech Republic with him for study abroad and he was consistently a kind and caring person. His legacy will continue to live on though all of the lives he’s touched. 

Dr. Kohn was one of the greatest professors (and people) that I have had the privilege of knowing. He went above and beyond to ensure his students succeeded. I will be forever grateful for all that he has done for me in my academic career. He will be missed dearly. 

I was a student of Dr. Kohn at Valdosta State University for Fall 2022 for my first semester of being a psychology major. He was a wonderful and laid-back professor that my classmates and I really enjoyed. He maintained a chill and helpful environment in the classroom. His chill humor and pop culture references while helping us with psychology, are just one of his cool ways to make the class more helpful.
I am truly saddened by the loss of this wonderful man and he will be truly missed by the Psychology majors and professors at Valdosta State.
