

It is with great sadness, the family of Brian Roy Houghton, age 71, of Watton Township, Ontario announce his passing on Saturday, July 3, 2011 at LaVerendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario.
He was born on March 30, 1940 in Barrie, Ontario to the late Roy and Norma Houghton. Brian grew up in Fort Frances, where he also graduated from Fort Frances High School. Following high school he attended and graduated from Syracuse University in New York. On February 16, 1963, Brian was united in marriage to the former Karen MacEachern. He later graduated from Teachers College at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay to begin a teaching career and spanned many years to come. Brian taught 2 years at Morson, Ontario and for 25 years in Thunder Bay for the Lakehead Board of Education. For the past 12 years of his career he was Vice Principle prior to retiring in 1995. Following retirement he returned to Fort Frances to live at their home on Rainy Lake, and spending their winters in Tucson, Arizona. For enjoyment, Brian loved the outdoors where he had a passion for hunting and fishing. His other interests also including spending time on the golf course.
Brian loved his family very much and he will be dearly missed by his family, fellow teachers and his many friends.
He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Tracy Houghton.
Brian is survived by his wife, Karen Houghton of Fort Frances, ON.; daughter, Melanie and husband Dave Lehman of Marissa, Illinois, and son, Brad Houghton of Fort Frances, ON.; three grandchildren, Abbie and Ashley Lehman and Jacki-Lyn Houghton. He is also survived by his sister, Anne and husband Bill Selman of St. Louis, Missouri; sister-in-law, Myrna Martin of Toronto, ON.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place at Rainy River Cremation Services in International Falls, Minnesota.
A memorial service to celebrate Brian’s life will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ontario with Reverend Carl Emke officiating.
