Mr. Donald (Donnie) Armit aged 82 years passed away on Saturday July 25, 2015 at Riverside Health Care Facility, Fort Frances Ontario. Don was born on August 26, 1932 in Fort Frances to the late Charles and Cecilia Armit and was their eldest son.
Donnie was educated in Fort Frances where he attended Robert Moore School and Fort Frances High School where he was elected Prefect while attending. Because of family hardships Donnie was not able to further his education after High School, however those who knew him were aware of his brilliance and his ability to learn on his own. He was a sponge keeping abreast of World Events and politics. He had a phenomenal memory regarding family history. Donnie chose to live a simple life with not too many wants. Through the years he had pet dogs that gave him company and tremendous walking distances each day. In his early years, Donnie enjoyed a good time with the Woods and George boys and many others.
Donnie’s greatest interest was his family. He loved his nieces and nephews unconditionally. He recently revealed in hospital why he never missed buying his weekly Lottery tickets. It was because if he won all the winnings were going to his nieces and nephews. He was always on our case if we were getting close to the deadline and hadn't yet acquired the tickets for him.
In his early years Donnie worked for the Paper Mill at Sand Island Falls area. Then the Toronto Dominion Bank in Winnipeg at Broadway and Donald, Boise Woodlands Central Garage and conducted his own book keeping service.
Donnie had a reputation for working with numbers and for many years prepared peoples Income Tax returns. With his caring nature he did returns for some of his clients at no charge knowing they could use the money for their own needs. He still had many loyal clients right to the end.
Donnie was a member of the Legion Branch 29 for many years.
He is survived by his sister Dede Egan, brother Robert (Erma), brother in law Dick Johnson, and special sister in law Bernice Armit, who always made sure that he was OK. Donnie was predeceased by his parents, sister Louisa (Tippy), brother David, Brother in law Ken Egan and his nephew Patrick Egan. Donnie also had a friendship with Pricilla Wright who was always there in time of need. He commented that Pricilla had saved his life early on in his illness.
