

He was born April 21, 1939 in Fort Frances, Ont. to August (Gus) and Helvi Kivimaki.
Ed is survived by his partner, Vivian Callaghan; son, Kelvin (Kim) of North Bay, Ont. and their sons, Kyle (Melissa) and Travis (Emily); and daughter, Janice (Henry) of Porters Lake N.S.
He also is survived by his brother, Larry (JoAnne); and nieces and nephews, Chris Kivimaki, Jennifer Kivimaki-Fournier, Lori Aasen, Brenda Herzig, and David Hay and their families.
Ed also will be fondly remembered by cousins, George Easton, Don Easton, and Jim (Sam) Easton; and by Vivian’s son, Kurt Callaghan, and her brothers and sisters and their families.
Ed was predeceased by his parents August and Helvi Kivimaki; sister, Miriam Hay; and (locally) cousins, Jack Easton and Karen Degelman.
Ed was a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, having served at RCAF bases in Trenton, Ont., Edmonton (Namao), Alta., North Bay, Ont., and Moose Jaw, Sask.
Following retirement, he returned to Fort Frances and worked for the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Town of Fort Frances at the airport, and as a town bus driver until the service was discontinued.
He then went on to drive school bus for a number of years.
Ed was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, serving on the Colour Party and on committees.
He also was a founding member of the Rainy Lake Amateur Radio Club, and worked hard to help develop and upgrade the ham radio network.
He enjoyed nothing better than spending his spare time at the island, constantly maintaining and upgrading the property, and especially enjoyed sharing its peaceful atmosphere and beauty with his family.
A come-and-go tea will be held Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Fort Frances.
At Ed’s request, there will be no funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the Chemotherapy Unit at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances or a charity of your choice.
