Angel was a veteran enlisting for 3 years in the national guard from 1949 to 1951 where he made rank of Corporal. He then enlisted in the US Army from 1951 to 1972 retiring with rank as Sergeant First Class E7 as an infantry combat drill instructor. He did tours in Korea and in Vietnam where he was severely wounded in action by a land mine. It took him several years to recover enough from his war injuries including special shoes he wore for his foot. And he had permanent shrapnel for the rest of his life throughout his back including two large ones in back of his neck to dangerous to surgically extract.
The airport metal detectors always went off when he traveled. Dad could never be still and always needed to be busy with something. Even while recovering from his own injuries in the hospital he learned to be an orthopedic assistance. In addition he loved doing carpentry and building things with cement. He built a whole house out of cement blocks for our grandma. After retiring from the US Army he then joined the US Postal service where he worked another 20 years until retirement. He earned several distinguished medals for his service, including the Purple Heart.
During his final days the old war injuries on his foot and other medical complications started to wear him down. Even to the end he fought with rehab doctors and nursing staff to let him go home to take care of mom. He was a soldier to the end never giving up and those are some of the many things that we learned from him. His three sons Angel, Eric, Edwin and his daughter in-law Clariza Robledo were all with him at his bedside the night before. Finally prostrate and lung cancer also took their toll on him and he died at 3:15 am in his sleep.
