Apollon Metaxides (1932-2024) passed away on August 16, 2024 at his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Born, raised and educated in the London Borough of Richmond, UK, it was there he also met and soon after married, June Ogden. Starting his work as a young software engineer, Apollon took a job with Bell Labs in Toronto, Canada and they moved to North America. His Bell Labs career continued with another move to the United States where he worked and lived in Lincroft, NJ later moving to Princeton, New Jersey. Following his retirement, Apollon and June settled in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Apollon had a great appreciation of art, warm weather and cello music. He was a curious soul with a very sophisticated palate, Apollon loved a great meal and spending time with friends and family. In his later years he carefully designed multiple shades of green in his garden, always had a pile of books to read or a project or a puzzle to solve and was a well known fixture tricycling in the park near his Ft. Lauderdale home.
Stoically self reliant, Apollon claimed that…”my long life was very lucky indeed. Along with good health, I was blessed with two amazing relationships.” He relished a loving, nearly 50 year marriage with his wife June and after her passing in 2008 he met Hannah Malbasha. He then moved to Ireland with Hannah and they enjoyed many years together with her family before she passed in 2019 and he returned to Ft. Lauderdale. His surviving family and friends also feel ‘very lucky indeed’ to have known Apollon. We will truly miss his love, generosity and inspiring friendship.
Along with his wife June Ogden Metaxides, Apollon was predeceased by his father, John Metaxides, his mother, Helen Balabanoghlu and an older brother, Theo Metaxides. Apollon is survived by his younger brother Andre Metaxides, of London, UK, his niece, Leila Shahbender, of Pennington NJ, his nephew, Tarik Shahbender, of Princeton, NJ, his niece, Randa Shahbender, of Juliustown, NJ, his nephew, Adam Cutts, of London, UK along with each of their families. He also leaves many dear friends and extended family in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Dublin, Ireland and throughout Australia.
