Born on June 1, 1921, Bert lived a life marked by quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and a deep commitment to those he loved. A proud father, partner, veteran, and educator, his warmth and wisdom touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Bert was a passionate scholar and public servant. He began his academic journey at Stanford University and went on to earn his degrees including his doctorate in education and political science from the University of California. During World War II, he served his country with distinction as a naval officer aboard the USS Canberra. Following his service, he dedicated himself to education, spending 16 years as Superintendent of Modesto City Schools, where his leadership left a lasting impact on generations of students and educators.
Even in retirement, Bert continued to lead with purpose, overseeing the family’s walnut farm with the same diligence and integrity that defined every chapter of his life.
He is survived by his life partner and husband, Robert Russo; his loving daughter Marilyn Corona; his sons Lawrence, Richard, and Robert Corona; and his stepdaughter Anna Russo. He was preceded in death by his daughter Barbra Corona-Sutton. Dr. Corona was a proud grandfather, and great-grandfather to many, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
Throughout his life, Bert embraced each era with curiosity and resilience, carrying with him the values of integrity, humility, and humor. Whether offering a word of encouragement, sharing a sharp wit, or simply listening with full presence, Bert brought light to the lives around him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The American Legion or the Human Rights Campaign.
He leaves behind a legacy of intellect, love, service, and quiet dignity. May he rest in peace, having lived a long and full life in community with family and friends.
