Franklin Jeremiah Malcolm was born February 8, 1928 in Johnson Town, Hanover, Jamaica, W.I. He attended Middlesex School in Hanover, Jamaica. After finishing school he worked with his father, Percival, in the town butcher shop and learned the skills of the trade during his young adult years. In his 30’s he met and married Daisy Louise Darby. Thereafter, they both migrated to England to start their new lives together. While in England, Franklin worked as a fettler of motor parts. He also had a great love of photography and enjoyed studying that as well. The next phase of his life brought him to the United States in 1969 where he settled in Brooklyn, NY with his wife and three children. He soon found a place of worship and started to attend Greenwood Baptist Church. To help support his young family, he secured a job at the Pfizer pharmaceutical company. After working there a few years, he moved on to work at the Midtown Meat Packing Company after attending the CUNY Food Trades Evening School. While employed there Franklin became a supportive member of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) Local 174. He was a diligent and punctual worker who often left before sunrise while his family slept. He also educated us on the quality of different meats and often shared funny stories from the workplace. After taking early retirement from the meat packing industry, he became a full-time owner and landlord – managing a large apartment building in Brooklyn, NY. After several years as a landlord he and his wife and one daughter relocated to Miami Beach, Florida in the late 1980’s. There he kept himself busy by managing a small building complex for a while. When his wife took ill he became the primary caretaker for her until she passed away in 2001. Three years later, Franklin started to take ill. He tried to hold on to his independence for a while. But as time went on his disease progressed and incapacitated him. On August 22, 2014, Franklin Malcolm passed away peacefully to be at eternal rest.
