Dr. Gary Richmond, a dedicated physician, trailblazer in HIV and beloved member of the medical community, passed away this December 24th at the age of 70. Known for his unwavering passion for medicine, Dr. Richmond leaves behind a legacy of groundbreaking contributions, exceptional patient care, and a life lived with purpose and compassion.
Born with an innate calling to heal, Gary dedicated his life to medicine. Specializing in pulmonary care, HIV treatment, and critical care, he was instrumental in opening the first HIV clinic in Broward County during the early days of the AIDS epidemic. His pioneering research significantly advanced modern HIV treatments, improving the lives of millions worldwide.
Dr. Richmond operated a thriving private practice in Fort Lauderdale for over 30 years, where his exceptional bedside manner and dedication to his patients earned him respect and admiration. His commitment extended beyond his practice, contributing to organizations like Doctors Without Borders and the Sierra Club. Even in retirement, his desire to help others led him to become licensed in North Carolina to assist those affected by hurricane Helene.
A lifelong lover of nature and animals, Gary found joy in hiking near his home in Maggie Valley, North Carolina, and capturing the beauty of the world through photography. His dogs, Sophie and Newton, were a source of comfort and companionship. Gary also enjoyed traveling, exploring exotic destinations, and embracing the richness of life with his beloved partner, Verne Appleby, who stood by his side through every chapter.
Gary’s sharp intellect, dry wit, and unyielding determination were as much a part of his character as his compassion and generosity. He was a passionate advocate, a mentor to many, and a friend to all who knew him. He participated in events like the Smart Ride, cycling from Miami to Key West to raise funds for AIDS awareness, always finding ways to combine his passions with his commitment to making a difference.
Dr. Gary Richmond is survived by his loving partner of 33 years Verne, his sister Joyce, her wife Andrea, and a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and patients who were touched by his kindness and brilliance. His legacy lives on in the lives he saved, the advancements he championed, and the love and laughter he shared with those around him.
Gary was born in Boston on March 27, 1954 to Elaine and Arnold Richmond who he cared for with utter devotion. Both predeceases him.
