Gloria Wetherington, born in Pawtucket, R.I. Gloria moved to Florida for her last year of high school with her Mom, Dad and sister. She loved deeply and fiercely. She was a devoted mom, sister, advocate, leader, and friend whose quiet strength and unwavering commitment to justice left a lasting impact on our community.
For over 30 years, Gloria served with distinction on the Sunrise Board of Directors, and gave her time and money to many organizations close to her heart like UCO, Ann Stork Center, Historical Society Broward County, Florida ARF Board and numerous other committees, embodying her belief that every voice deserves to be heard and every person treated with dignity. Her influence extended statewide through leadership roles with the Florida Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, the Human Rights Advocacy Committee, and the Health and Human Services Board, where she championed equity and inclusion for individuals with disabilities.
Recognized with numerous honors—including the Frankie Thomas Volunteer of the Year Award and the Honorable Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award—Gloria’s advocacy was both professional and deeply personal.
Outside her public service, Gloria was a respected commercial real estate broker, known for her integrity and dedication. She seamlessly blended career and volunteerism, leaving a legacy that crossed industries and generations.
But under all this, Gloria was more than a leader—she was a mentor, a friend, and a beacon of hope. She was our family historian, and her guidance will be forever missed. However, her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the policies she shaped, and the communities she uplifted. May we honor her memory by advocating for those without a voice.
