Oliver was born on October 17, 1946, in Huehuetenango, Guatemala, to Ceferino and Reinalda (Martinez) Felix. As a young man, he made the courageous decision to leave behind the only life he knew and journey to Miami alone, with nothing but the hope and desire to succeed and seek the American Dream, while his family remained in Guatemala. He arrived in Miami in his late teens and was promptly registered for the Vietnam War draft, though he was not selected.
In the 1970s, one of his most notable and impactful jobs was at the iconic Wolfie Cohen's Rascal House in Sunny Isles Beach, FL, on Collins Avenue, where he worked for over a decade and developed his renowned skills in Jewish cuisine, particularly in dishes like pastrami, corned beef, brisket, and other traditional offerings. Known for his delicious sandwiches and fine dishes, his work earned him recognition for crafting some of the best in the industry.
Oliver met the love of his life, Juanita Felix, while attending school in Miami. Although he initially pursued a career in architecture, he soon discovered his true passion in the culinary arts. Together, he and Juanita raised three children in a home filled with love, where family was always the priority. He worked at several prestigious country clubs throughout his career, including St. Andrews Country Club in Boca Raton, FL, where he spent over 20 years of dedicated service. Throughout his career, he also played a key role in mentoring and training chefs at other renowned country clubs, leaving a lasting impact on the culinary community. After more than 50 years in the food and restaurant industry, he retired to spend more time with his beloved wife and family. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Oliver was passionate about soccer, both as a player and a coach. Later in life, he also developed an interest in boxing.
Oliver's legacy is one of dedication, excellence, and love for his family. His contributions to the culinary world left an indelible mark, and his guidance shaped the careers of many young chefs. Above all, his love for his family, selflessness, and kindness continue to be a foundation for all who knew him.
Oliver is survived by his wife, Juanita, his five children, and six grandchildren. Known for his kindness, generosity, and soulfulness, Oliver touched the lives of many. In his later years, as his health began to decline, his devoted wife, Juanita, cared for him lovingly and without fail.
A memorial service will be held in Oliver’s memory on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 1:00 PM at St. Coleman’s Church, 1200 S. Federal Highway, Pompano Beach, FL 33062.
The family warmly invites all who wish to honor Oliver’s life and legacy to join them during the service.
In accordance with his wishes, the family has chosen cremation.
