

Smith, Roy D.,AIA, 81, of Fort Lauderdale passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2013. Born in Cooper, Texas, he was the son of the late Lola Biggs Smith and Roy Smith. He leaves behind his loving wife, Jennifer; beloved daughter Elizabeth Miller and son-in-law Jeffrey Miller; grandchildren: Ryan and Brooke Miller; and cats: Bogie and Bacall. Educated at Texas Tech University, where he received a BA in Architecture, his architectural career spanned over 50 years-beginning in New York City. Roy moved to Fort Lauderdale in the early ‘70’s to join the Radice Corporation. In 1973 he began his own architectural practice in South Florida. Receiving numerous awards for his projects including many on the campus of Nova Southeastern University, the Leo Goodwin Sr. Residence Hall, the Dental College, the Miami Dolphins Training Facility and the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship. Also Beach Place, Lago Mar, Harbor Walk, Harbor Place and Land’s End among others. His work included mega yachts such as award-winning, Azzura and the Gallant Lady. He served in the Army and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta-designing its fraternity house at Texas Tech. He served on the board of directors of the Museum of Art and the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business. Past president of the Broward Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Loved by everyone who knew him. One of the “old guard” of architects in South Florida.
