Ruthanne (Dolly) Shelare Walker passed away June 25, 2014 in the care of Catholic Hospice at Holy Cross Hospital with family at her side. Dolly was born at home on July 2, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Alphonse A. and Anna Tierney Shelare. She graduated from Marymount Academy, Tarrytown, NY and attended Finch College. She married Thomas J Walker in 1943 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC. In 1957 the family moved to Ft. Lauderdale. While raising five children was her primary love in life, Dolly was active as a volunteer at St. Anthony’s School, and was one of the first members of the Holy Cross Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, and chaired fundraisers including Easter Seal Society Ball and Holy Cross Ball. In the mid 1960’s the Walkers built a family home at Lake Toxaway, NC. Dolly adored the mountains, the original simplicity of the area, and the many family gatherings there for 40 years. Most important to her was her role as a consummate wife to Tom and mother to her five children, Hallie W. Batchelder, Frank C. Walker, Barbara W. Tight (Tom), Anne Shelare (Shelley) Walker, and Thomas J. Walker, Jr. (Terry). Her life was enriched by 11 loving grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Dolly is also survived by one sister, Nancy Wallace of Tequesta and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband Thomas J. Walker, grandson Christopher (Bubba) Walker, three brothers and three sisters. Mom’s love and dedication to her family has been an inspiration to us all and will remain with us forever.
