Evet Evadney White a devoted wife, mother, sister, and nurse, passed away on November 6th, 2025, after a courageous battle with illness. She was 85 years old.
Evet was born on March 12th, 1940, in Manchester, Jamaica, the seventh child of Steven Augustus Mattis and Magneita Mattis. She attended Fairfield primary school. After finishing school at Fairfield she migrated to London, England as a part of the Windrush Era. Evet pursued her calling in healthcare, attending nursing school and went on to become a Registered Nurse and a certified midwife, where she successfully delivered over 75 babies.
She eventually migrated to New York in 1970. She met and married Kenneth George White in 1976, and they were happily married for 49 years. They settled in The Bronx, where Evet worked as a pediatric staff nurse at Montefiore Hospital until her retirement in 2000.
Evet’s life was marked with great resilience. Diagnosed with renal failure, she received a life-saving kidney on Mother’s Day of 1987. Dealing with health issues did not deter her from her educational goals, she attended and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from The College of New Rochelle in May of 1995.
On January 1st, 2001, Kenneth and Evet relocated to Lehigh Acres in Florida where she lived for 24 years. Evet was an active member of The United Methodist Church of Lehigh Acres, until she was no longer able to attend services due to her declining health. While in Florida, her donor kidney began to show signs of rejection after 20 plus years; it was removed the weekend of Mother’s Day in 2016. Evet then returned to dialysis, which she bravely continued until her passing.
Evet loved to travel and visited countries like Senegal and The Gambia. She took several Caribbean Cruises, visited Rome, Paris, and Switzerland. She enjoyed Hong Kong so much that she went twice. She was a woman of great style and fashion, who also enjoyed reading, cooking, and shopping, attending Broadway plays and taking bus trips, including a memorable visit to the World’s Fare in Nashville Tennessee.
Above all, Evet especially loved her family and would do anything for her loved ones. Her honest and direct communication was loved and appreciated by all who knew her. She was a fearless warrior who faced and overcame many obstacles in her life.
Evet is survived by her loving husband Kenneth. She is also survived by her daughter, Michelle Broderick and son-in-law, Ashton Miller Jr. Unfortunately, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, Rohan Paul Thompson, who passed away suddenly in September of 2019. Evet leaves behind her loving sisters, Hermin Bowes, Mercena Mattis, Leida Kinlock and brother-in-law Alexander Kinlock. Evet also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. Evet was preceded in death by her loving parents, and her brothers and sister: Ken, Ephraim, Dolsie, Lloyd, Ruben and Steven.
