Born March 8, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY, Harry was the son of Henry and Veronica (Bouwer) Lewis, Sr.
Harry was a devoted and loyal friend to many. Known for his sympathetic ear and a bright smile, he had a natural ability to make anyone in his presence feel immediately at ease.
A veteran of the US Navy, Harry served four years as a Petty Officer Third Class and dental technician in Brunswick, ME. Following his military service, he brought his creative talents to the iconic Macy’s flagship store at Herald Square. As the hand behind their famous window displays, Harry helped transform the store into a destination of holiday magic for countless visitors at Christmas time.
His career later took him to Hartford, CT, where he served as the manager of the Ethan Allen furniture gallery. Harry’s impeccable taste in furniture and antiques made him a natural fit for the role. He eventually transitioned to the corporate world at Polaroid in Cambridge, MA, where he worked until his retirement in 1990.
In the early 1970s, Harry and his partner, Stanley Yelmokas, embarked on a labor of love by purchasing the historic Falvey mansion at 948 E Broadway in South Boston, MA. They spent the next 20 years meticulously restoring the estate to its former stature, working on "the big house" every day after their corporate shifts. Following their retirement from Polaroid in 1990, they moved to Bridgton, ME, where they owned and operated the Augustus Perley House Bed & Breakfast for ten years.
In 2000, after years of "snowbirding," Harry and Stan retired permanently to the Breckenridge community in Estero, where Harry enjoyed a peaceful retirement and a community of friends who will miss his grace and charm.
Harry was predeceased by his partner of many years, Stan Yelmokas, and his sisters, Alberta Ficht, Florence Cavalieri, and Maddy Pecquex. He is survived by his brother, Jim Lewis, and his many nieces and nephews: Amanda, Chris, Dan, David, Frank, Gary, Jeff, Jim, Matt, Mike, Renee, Tom, and Veronica. Also, dear friends and the children of Stanley Yelmokas, Ann Marie Yelmokas McDermott, John and Mark Yelmokas. We thank the staff at Hope Hospice for their attentive care in Harry’s final days.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Apex, NC, where Harry’s brother resides.
