John D. Gergel, age 77, died on Sunday, January 31, 2021. Beloved husband of 53 years to Dolores (nee Pilck). Loving father of Jeanine Gergel (Adam Jusko), Jacquie Graves (fiancé David Nemchik) and Johanna “Joey” Gergel Zappitelli (Lou). Grandfather of Micah Zappitelli, Jack and Jane Jusko and Sophia and Julia Graves. Son of the late John and Joanne Gergel. Uncle and honorary uncle to many and friend to many, many more.
John was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where he lived for 72 years. A graduate of West Tech High School and a former member of the U.S. Army Reserve, he spent his entire career in the lithograph printing industry, starting as a “stripper” and eventually becoming owner and president of Watt Printers, a position he held for more than 30 years until he retired. His customers became his friends – usually for life – and he loved them all.
A resident of Fort Myers, Florida, since 2015, he was a member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church. A USCG licensed captain, he loved boating, warm weather, live music and a stiff Crown Royal. He always rooted for the underdog. Anyone down on their luck who was fortunate enough to cross paths with him and found their life changed for the better.
The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date, when it is safe to gather again. Memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
