Joseph Robert "Bopo" Richter, 91, of Fort Myers, FL, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born in Bohemia, New York on December 27, 1931 to the late Joseph and Bessie Richter.
He was honorably discharged from the US Navy. He was a 29 year member of the Bohemia, New York volunteer Fire Department and was Chief of the Department from 1961 to 1962. He was a member of the Bohemia Fire Department Racing Team from 1948-1977. In the 1960’s and 70’s he was a member of the Sunrisers Drum and Bugle Corps of Mineola, NY. They played at Carnegie Hall which he played a solo and also for Queen Elizabeth II. Joseph coached Little League football and baseball for many years. After moving to Florida, he worked as a supervisor at Lehigh Corp. In 1982 he was a Florida State Amateur Softball Champion and in 1985 and 1988 he was a member of the 60 + Overall Softball Champions Team. In 1989, he was on the Senior Softball World Champions League of Lee County.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Carmela F. Richter; his children: Joseph “Rick” (Judy) Richter, Rose Marie (David) Richter-Govanus, Charles R. (Karen) Richter and Keith S. (Maria) Richter; grandchildren: Joey Richter, Chucky Richter, David Richter, Ryan Richter, Cynthanie Richter and Elric Richter; and great grandchildren: Kamron, Trinity, Keydon, Amelia, Mari and Kenway.
A Celebration of Life service is pending.
