Judy had a strong personality and eyes that could pierce your soul, especially if you were misbehaving. She was a rock for her children. It was only later in life they learned she was afraid of just about everything!
She grew up with three sisters in a close knit family. After high school graduation, she got a job at the local bank, as a teller. Many residents of Douglas, Georgia, would wait longer in her line so she could serve them. She was faithful to help her parents and sisters. She bought her mother her first washing machine. She also financed several bathing suits and accessories for her younger sisters, often spending more than she would for herself.
She caught the eye of a local fellow, on a blind double date, even though they were not paired with each other. They started dating long distance while he completed his engineering degree. Upon graduation he got a job in Spokane, Washington, about as far from Douglas as you could get. He called every weekend asking Judy to come to Washington and marry him. She finally agreed. They lived in upstate New York and Northern Virginia while raising their two daughters. Retirement took them down the intracoastal waterway to Ft. Myers, Florida, on a 42’ trawler. They were liveaboards for several years.
She was smarter than most of us and enjoyed puzzles, Sudoko, reading and scrabble. She and her sister loved a good ruthless game of scrabble when they would get together. She loved Jesus and endeavored to share His love with all around her. She will be missed.
Judy is survived by her daughters: Michelle Meeks and Melanie Meeks Phillips; grandchildren: Laurel Purdy, Brent (Jennifer) Wood, Amanda Phillips and Cyndi Hudson; great grandchildren: Grace Sapakowski and Caroline Canary and sister, Melly Idleman. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Charles and Grace Pearl Swain and her husband, Dan C. Meeks.
