Mary Bernadette Boonstra

It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Bernadette Boonstra announces her passing on April 1, 2025. She died unexpectedly after a short illness in Ft. Myers, FL. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Boonstra and brother Terrence Swales. Bernadette was born May 20th 1930 in Whitley Bay, UK.

She spent her early years in Jarrow. The daughter of Bede and Anne Swales. She pursued advanced education in the medical field. Seeking opportunity, she made her way to British Columbia where she met the love of her life, James Boonstra. They married shortly after and raised 3 children, Ann, David and Stephen. Raising a family in Rio de Janeiro Brazil and Caracas Venezuela then on to Puerto Rico and settling in Ft. Myers, FL. she always brought warmth, kindness and a gentle strength to all.

She is survived by her 3 children and their spouses Ann Boonstra Klimas and Joe, David Boonstra and Sunday, Stephen Boonstra and Shelly along with her 2 grandchildren, Anya and Larisa and many who are fortunate to call her a friend. She was a devoted Church member and her faith sustained her throughout her life. She will be remembered by her kindness and unwavering love for those around her.

A memorial service will be held at St. Cecilia, 5632 Sunrise Dr. Ft. Myers, Fl 33919 May 20, 2025 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations made in her memory to St. Cecilia Catholic Community or St. Vincent de Paul.
