Bonnye Card McGill

20 febrero , 194712 febrero , 2020

Bonnye Card McGill, 72, of Vero Beach, FL, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Robert McGill and mother of Sean and Scott McGill.

Born in Westerly, RI on February 20, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Robert Card and Louise (Vuono) Card.

Bonnye was raised in Ashaway, RI, where she lived until moving to Westerly, RI in 1979 with her young family. She was drawn to the warmth and light of Florida, and she and her husband Bob moved permanently to Vero Beach in 2007.

In 1973, Bonnye earned her BA at the University of Rhode Island. For 28 years, she was a teacher at Chariho School: she taught eighth-grade social studies for nearly two decades before moving to the high school, where she taught history. She was serving as the head of the high-school history department when she retired in 2001. Bonnye was a tough but compassionate teacher, and she shaped the lives of countless students by instilling self-discipline, curiosity, and a sense of the value of hard work.

Bonnye was an enthusiast for all things Disney: she especially enjoyed vacationing at Disney World and on Disney cruises. She and Bob also spent countless happy hours with visiting children, grandchildren, and friends at the Vero Beach Disney Resort.

Family always came first for Bonnye. She was part of a large extended family in Rhode Island and Connecticut, and some of her fondest memories were of weekend family parties that filled her life in Ashaway and Westerly. Her greatest pride were her sons and grandchildren; they will always treasure her selfless devotion to them.

In Vero Beach, Bonnye was blessed to have a circle of close friends and a caring church community. Along with her family, they were an enormous support to her in her last years, as she fought her cancer. Her courage and grace in facing her illness were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Bonnye is survived by her husband, Bob; her sister, Lisa (Card) Rapoza and her husband Walter and son Jonathan; her sons, Sean and Scott; her daughter-in-law Sarah Ellenzweig; and her five grandchildren, Connor, Carly, Charlie, Alexander, and Julian McGill.

Bonnie was a shepherd to our two little lambs, while at Living Lord Lutheran Church. During our short lived Sunday night family service, she was one of three ladies who helped facilitate the Sunday night children's church. She not only helped with activities and snacks, but always made them feel that they were special. We all knew this, because the children always wanted to come back.

Bonnye and I were cousins. We grew up together in Westerly / Ashaway. We spent a lot of time at her parent's house (Louise and Bob Card). Great memories! Bob, Lisa, Sean and Scott, please accept my condolences.

Mrs. McGill was my 9th grade history teacher. She was strict but fair and I learned so much from her as a student. As a fellow teacher now, I appreciate how hard she worked to keep her classes organized and interesting. She had a great sense of humor and made the transition from middle school to high school easy for us.

I met Bob and Bonnye many years ago when I moved to Heron Cay. Bonnye made me feel comfortable right from the start even though I was in a very unfamiliar place. I knew right then and there this was a person I could trust. She was one of the most honest and fun people in our community. If you needed a laugh, just look Bonnye up. She always had a smile for you and something to say to make you laugh. I will miss you my friend. My best to bob and the boys.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting Bob and Bonnye on a Disney Cruise while still in the terminal! They were waiting for their boarding number to be called as were we! We joined them at one of the few tables and started talking! Next thing we realize was that we were all assigned to the same dining room table, restaurant, and time! It was very easy to immediately feel like we had known them for many years! Such great times we shared with them meeting up with them in Disney when we were down! To know them is to truly love them!! Bonnye and I shared a lot of common things and I will forever appreciate her warmth, courage, but mostly the many many laughs we have shared!!! I will miss you my friend!

I met Bonnye when I was working for the Disney Vacation Club. I felt like she adopted me right from the beginning. Bonnye and Bob were not living in Vero when I first met them , but they always made a point to visit me when they came to the Disney's Vero Beach Resort . She had a infectious laugh and such a positive outlook on life . She will be missed . My Condolences go out to the family .

I met Bonnye at Heron Cay when we lived there. Bonnye was such a sweet Woman that everyone loved. She brightened up the World. I guess God wanted her at his home to be one of His Special Angels. She will be remembered and loved by all.

I was so very saddened to learn of Bonnye’s passing. I met her many years ago when we taught at Chariho Middle School/High School in Rhode Island. Bonnye was an outstanding teacher, my son’s favorite teacher years ago. She was a great wife, mom and devoted grandmother. Bonnye was a truly creative person, a talented homemaker and seamstress. My heartfelt condolences to Bob, Sean, Scott , Lisa and her five grandchildren. Rest In peace , brave lady. ❤️ You will be so missed.
Love and Prayers,
