My heart was SAD today when I went to see if there was a new number listed for my mother's (Bernice) favorite cousin. I went to call to rehash memories of Uncle Freddie's passing on Dec 9th 1985... She was so special giving me WISE advice to stay with my Mom,she said" My employer will never remember in 5 years if I stayed 2 days or 5 days and she was SO RIGHT because 6 weeks later my Mom passed and I knew I did the right thing because cousin Lil was my guiding light..... we shared special time on her visits to NYC especially the day we went to Stamford Conn to meet the author of the Geffen Family tree....MOST if all I was her Flower Girl at her WEDDING  when I was 4 years old. IN FACT I have the VIDEO of the Ceremony with the men in TOP HATS and Tails. To this day i remember that special wedding experience whenever I smell a fragrant Rose....... I was so saddended to hear of Lillian's passing. As a long time real estate agent, I've worked with lots of people over the years, and none as memorable as Lillian.  This tiny yet tough little lady dragged me all over Vero Beach looking at tons of homes, could never really make a decision and ultimately didn't buy a home, but I have to say, I really enjoyed every single outing with her. She was sweet, funny, and smart and there was a lot of energy packed into that little package. She undoubtedly will be missed by many, and I will always remember this fine lady fondly. AND SENT HER ON HER WAY 
AWAY

MYSTERIOUS JOYS WE WANT TO FEEL

I grew up down the street from Jon, Lance and Scott. When I was at Lance's house we were always playing games and I remember that Lee was a little different from the other Moms. She ways involved. If we played Risk (Lance always won) or ping pong she was aware of who was winning, who was losing, what was going on. If we played Yahtzee she would pick up the dice... she was playing!

One time she was driving Lance and me to the lake house. One of us had heard that if you can get a trucker's attention and pump your fist up and down, he will blow his very loud air horn. (I guess that the horn was operated by pulling a string that was on the roof of his cab so our fist pump emulated this motion.) I don't remember which one of us had the nerve to try it first, but it worked... one very loud toot of an air horn and it was game on.

As always Lee was immediately a part of the game. She would speed up to catch up to any truck we saw and make sure she passed in the lane right next to the truck. Lance and I would take turns hanging half way out the window at 60 mph so we were sure the trucker could see us while a fist was pumping. When we got the reward and a trucker blew his horn, all three of us laughed every time. It was thrilling.

Maybe we could take a moment here to reflect on the innocence of youth. Not every trucker is a person that a pre-teen boy should be playing with. Eventually we came across the guy who would teach us that lesson. A guy who did not blow his horn. A guy who flipped us the bird.

Lance and I were shocked and embarrassed. We suddenly felt like idiots. Lee knew something had happened, but she couldn't see the trucker. She insisted that we tell her. Eventually, we stammered something out and she figured it out.

I remember how matter of factly she reacted to this. No anger, no vengeance, no life lesson from a parent. Actually, she reacted exactly like we did. We all drove on in silence for a while.

As I think back on it I wonder how that could have been? How could Lee not have anticipated this, but then I remember that Lee was not like all the other Moms. She wasn't just fostering a game. She was playing the game. She was just as young and naive as we were. She was one of us.

Cast off years of experience, and enthusiastically participate in the games of children. Share the joy and the hurt as though you are doing it for the first time. What could be better than that?

I wish that I too can always stay that young.

I still remember how comforting your mother was to my son Michael at the Thanksgiving dinner in Florida.  She was a very sweet lady. My family and I offer our deepest condolences.

I remember lots of good times with Lee in Vero Beach.  I think around 1995 is when she and I got to know eachother as adults rather than me as a kid. She and I spent many hours in the "computer room" learning the internet, email and WORD.  We also enjoyed relaxing by her pool.  I would frequently say to Lee, "Wouldn't you like to have a little dog to keep you company?"....to which she'd laugh and reply, "Oh God, between you & Lance! Just what I need,...a dog!"  
Memories of good times at Phyllis & Bert's family gatherings in NJ as well as Syosett....and, of course, "Pepsi".
Lee, may you rest in peace, love and serenity.

Lance, Jon, and Scott: I recall fondly the fun and hospitality that your mother offered us when we stayed over (sleeping on the floor I believe) at her house in Vero Beach many years ago - the one with the pool in courtyard. She clearly inspired fierce loyalty and deep love in her sons. 

Even when it's expected, the death of a parent is a great emotional blow. In the hope that it might help you cope with your loss, I will pass along an observation an anthropologist friend shared with me shortly after the death of my father. 

We met for lunch a couple of weeks after his death and my friend asked how I was doing. Not wanting to dwell on what had happened, I said that I was feeling a bit blue, but I was really OK. 

My perceptive friend responded: The death of a parent is hard. Although you may not recognize it right now, there's a dark cloud over everything. Your mind is going to keep turning back to your father's life and death. Over the next months you will be sorting out your relationship with your father, both the good and the not-so-good parts. In about year or so, you will have made peace with his death and the dark cloud will lift. The world filled with the everyday joys and frustrations of family, friends, and vocation will return. 

My friend was right - the cloud lifted in about a year. I hope that the same will happen for you. The sorrow and the loss will remain, but you will appreciate and treasure even more deeply the gifts of love that your mother gave you. 

My condolences to all three of Lillian's sons. Lance, I hope I will see you soon.

May your Mom and her sister,Phyllis Hirsch Boyson rest in peace together. This event and this date, Phyllis's birthday, evoke many memories for me,-our shared good times with the 3 of you and Heidi and Brad at various places, your grandparents house in Lindenhurst, the furniture store, the liquor store, Sadie's love for Israel and stories of how HIAS helped to bring her to the US, Frank's unsurpassed loyalty to the Mets and how he ran out with his police cap whenever the fire siren was sounded,our celebrations at your home in Syosset,trips to  E. Stroudsburg Pa with the Zachar family, Rose and Joe, and Nikki ,Leon and Ruth,Robert and Dianne  and occasionaly Frannie and Dave up from Florida. Leon and Ruth's clothing store. 

There were also some rough times for you and for all of us, Mom's painful divorce and too many tragic losses of loved ones. 

The photo of Lee really projects her twinkle and her zest for life which I know she transmitted to young and old down in Florida. So let's remember that and all the fond memories as we observe her passing from the material to the spiritual world.

While I haven't seen her in years, I fondly remember her warmth and hospitality to me in Vero Beach. I regarded her as a great mom, to inspire such love from her boys, and a woman to be respected, especially during her widowhood, carving out a life filled with theatrical productions and friends. Our family's thoughts are with the Landers brothers today. May her memory be a comfort to you.

The mother son relationship is a special bond that is only fully understood once the mom is not there.   I am grateful that John,Scott, and Lance had the chance to be with their mom recently before she passed on.  I send my thoughts to all of you and hope that you have the time to reflect on your relationship with your mom and continue to bring those positive thoughts into your lives.

We will be thinking of you today.  Everyone knows how devoted her boys were to their mom, and how much she loved them.  I will fondly remember many great things about  her,and recall some happy times.  She always enjoyed visiting New York, and going out to eat Chinese or Thai.  With  a cocktail or two, the conversation would get truly started and she would regale us with stories of the boy"s antics.  A great lady, who will be greatly missed.

They say we choose our friends,not our family,I didn't have Lil as a Mom,so I chose her as a friend. Lils lips "my sister from another mister." We shared our thoughts of yesterdays and what ifs, we laughed at our corny jokes, we would talk and listen and cry about our problems,with always willing to lend a helping hand. We'd loose track of time. When a loved one passes; our thoughts seem to go off in all different directions,what we should of',would of',could of ,done.  Lil's sons try to say at times,thanking me for all I did for their mom, but in actuality I thank them for sharing their Mom with me.  I will cherish our talks and memories together,always.

Lee dear, May your soul rest in peace!! I loved you much. We had much fun on our trips and visits to your home, that brought us the happiness we wondered how to get. May you be happy (on the other side) until we meet again.  Love, Rosie (Zacher/Heifetz)

Lee was a living embodiment of all the good elements associated with the expression “Jewish mother.” She was sweet and lovable, hospitable, devoted, sharing and caring, doting, giving, and often cooking. She had a special fondness for children, reflected among other ways in her career as a school teacher. She was loved and adored by almost everyone who came into contact with her. I was fortunate enough to have Lee as a “second mother” for decades of my life, which became especially important for me when my own mother passed away almost 25 years ago. I am grateful for the opportunity to have known this wonderful woman. Jewish mothers, like most mothers, are especially good driers of tears. I wish she could be here to dry mine now, even while the memory of her brings a smile to my face.

Lillian was a fabulous woman. She seems to have been in my life from my earliest memories. We started our journey together when I was her "flower girl" at her wedding to Bob Landers. Even though I was only 2, I remember thinking how beautiful she was. She brought joy into a room just by entering it. She had a magnificent smile & the amazing thing about Lil was that smile was always there no matter what was going on in her life. She will be greatly missed. I take joy in knowing that she is once again young, beautiful, pain free & happy.

What a great photo of Aunt Lee! 
It feels a bit spooky but ultimately comforting that her funeral is on her sister's birthday.  They were very close, especially growing up.  Aunt Lee was particularly supportive of me and my brother Brad when we first got my mother's diagnosis of lymphoma, the summer I was graduating from college in Michigan.
I also remember fondly the times she asked me to be her 'subject' growing up so she could practice giving children assessments.  I felt so important and smart!  She was such a dedicated teacher who will be missed greatly.  Love, Heidi, her niece
