

Marion Merinda (Graves) McCarthy, age 92 passed into eternity at home on March 24, 2013. She was born in Clarendon, Vermont on Sept. 8, 1920, daughter of Charles and Merinda (Martin) Graves. She grew up in Fair Haven, Vermont and graduated from Fair Haven High School. Marion was a graduate of the Mary Fletcher Hospital School of nursing in Burlington, Vermont. Her long and active career in nursing started during WWII when nurses were in great demand on the home front. She was married to William James McCarthy. They had three children: one son and two daughters. Because of Bill’s employment, they lived in several New England states and eventually moved to Boston, Massachusetts where she worked as a staff nurse and later an assistant supervisor at the New England Deaconess Hospital. Certified in Coronary Care, Marion was one of four nurses at Derry New Hampshire Hospital that pioneered the first Intensive Care Unit there. She and her husband moved to Vero Beach, Florida in 1975 where she worked the final eleven years of her nursing career at Indian River Memorial Hospital. Marion was a member of the Baptist faith and believed one day she would be reunited with family and friends in heaven. She is survived by two daughters: Frances Bowen of Benson, Vermont and Suzanne Gerstner of Vero Beach, Florida. She leaves twelve grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband William J. McCarthy and her son William J. McCarthy II. Marion was one of eight children and is survived by two sisters: Eunice Sheldrick of Bomoseen, Vermont and Mildred Lowell of Lakeland, Florida. A Visitation will be Wednesday, March 27, 2013 from 12-1pm with a funeral service at 1:00pm at Aycock Funeral Home, Fort Pierce, Florida. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Fort Pierce, Florida
