George Lloyd Scott, 96, late of Fort Saskatchewan, AB, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 8, 2013 at the Kipnes Centre for Veterans in Edmonton. He was born on December 29, 1916 in Forgan, Saskatchewan and was the seventh surviving child of William and Mary (Lee) Scott.
George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elsie (Shantz) Scott, step-daughter, Jean (Jancsek) Watson of Regina; two brothers, Marshall and Norman, and four sisters; Annie, Ruth, Grace and Zelma.
George and Elsie made many friends as they moved across Canada during his career as a plant superintendent with Burns Canada. When they settled in Fort Saskatchewan in the early 1980s, they engrained themselves in their community, especially within social groups that focused on singing. George had a phenomenal voice and was an active member of the Pioneer Lodge vocal group for years. Individually, however, and at any random gathering, George would amaze everyone with an impromptu rendition of “Oh, Danny Boy” that would leave people in tears. George also took pleasure in the Pioneer Lodge’s weekly game of bocce ball.
In addition to singing, George’s other undeniable talent was conversing. He was an adept raconteur, which was bolstered by his insatiable appetite for information about current events, history, and also his keen sense of humor. He was an avid reader of newspapers, history books and magazines. George captivated everyone he spoke to with his vast knowledge of almost any topic, from sports to politics to history to current events to the arts. He always ended conversations with a well-timed quip.
George also took pride in his beautiful yard, gorgeous geraniums and stunning garden, for which he was well known. He felt that if you could keep your garden in order, you could keep your life in order. The vibrant appearance of the outside of George and Elsie’s home reflected the love of their family and friends found within.
George is survived by his son-in-law, Bob Watson of Regina; grandchildren, Karen (Don) Conly of Regina, Leslie (Dave) Relke of Calgary, Brad (Amy) Watson of Denver, Craig (Angela) Watson of Regina, Jim (Robyn) Jancsek of Edmonton, Kent (Cheryl) Jancsek of Stony Plain, step son Bob (Sheila) Jancsek of Edmonton; niece Diane (Joe) Rohrer of Sherwood Park, and nephew, Blaine Scott of Regina; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He also leaves his best friend Don (Linda) Libby of Fort Saskatchewan and many other family members.
