Marguerite B. Carney, 106, of Fort Smith, AR., beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother was called to Our Lord on Monday, November 25, 2024. She was born on March 20, 1918, in Fort Smith, AR to Frank J. Brun and Teresa Mauracher Brun. She attended Catholic schools through high school, then received her two-year degree from what was then Fort Smith Community College. During these years and into young adulthood, she was a dedicated student of classical ballet, traveling in the summers with her teachers to study in various parts of the country. Also, during this time, she and many young women formed the Red Cross Motor Pool that assisted the soldiers stationed at Camp Chaffee. In 1942, Marguerite married George Carney, who was a flight instructor in the Navy. After the War, they moved back to Fort Smith and started their family. Marguerite was a homemaker, raising her girls and being a community volunteer. She was active in her church Christ the King, the Fort Smith Junior League, and the Fort Smith Little Theatre, to name a few. After her husband’s death in 1980, she became a businesswoman, stepping in to run the family’s real estate business, beginning a whole new phase of her life of which she was very proud. She was an avid, accomplished bridge player for years playing with her friends in their weekly bridge club. They were a highly competitive group of ladies and dear longtime friends. When asked about her secret to her longevity, Marguerite always replied: my strong faith in God, remaining active in mind and body, and a martini and a glass of white wine with dinner. She was dearly loved by her family, by many, many in the community and will be deeply, deeply missed by all.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, George Donnell Carney, Jr., and her grandson, Randolph Carney Ney.
She is survived by her three daughters, Donna Agee of Sherwood, AR, Margot Carney of Fort Smith, AR and Debbie Carney of Fort Smith, AR, three grandchildren, Ronnie Vervack, Jr. (Andrea), Donnell Becker and Jonathan M. Ney (Jessica). She is also survived by seven great grandchildren, Brooke Wilkins (Garrett), Brandon Becker (Anabelle), Brady Becker, Briley Becker, Katie Vervack, Claire Vervack and Finnegan Ney, and three great-great grandchildren, Brynne Becker, Blair Wilkins and Winnie Wilkins.
