Marie Michele Johnston was the second daughter of Martha and DuVal Johnston, born March 4, 1949, in Fort Smith. She was a 1967 graduate of Saint Anne’s Academy in Fort Smith, followed by her graduation from The University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Upon earning a bachelor’s degree in special education, Michele was one of the first special education teachers hired by the Fort Smith School District, and she found great fulfillment through her dedication to her students, followed by her appointment as Area Coordinator for Sebastian and surrounding counties, providing support and resources for her fellow teaching professionals.
Michele married her high school sweetheart, Daniel V. Evans, on August 23rd, 1969, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fort Smith. Their family was complete when they welcomed two daughters, Lara Ellen and Elise Danielle. Michele was a dedicated and encouraging mother, whether cheering with Dan at Lara’s swim meets or beaming from the audience at Elise’s dance performances.
Michele also devoted her time to enriching her community. She was a graduate of Leadership Fort Smith, a past president of the Junior League of Fort Smith, a past president of the Southside High School PTA, and a past officer in various roles with the local Pi Beta Phi alumnae club. She was very proud of her work in creating the Junior League’s annual Riverfest fundraiser.
Michele relished her time spent with family at the Evans retreat on Lake Tenkiller in Cookson, Oklahoma. She enjoyed reading, playing cards (especially Bridge), and tending to her rose garden. She will be remembered for her fierce love of her family and her sharp wit.
Michele is predeceased by her parents and sister Ellen Johnston Porta of Plano, Texas. She is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Dan; daughters Lara Evans and partner Gabriel Strom of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Elise Hayes and husband Christopher Hayes of Norman, Oklahoma, and grandson Graeme Christopher Hayes, also of Norman. Surviving siblings are DuVal D. (Butch) Johnston and wife Janie of Fort Smith, and Allison Johnston of Plano, Texas. Michele also leaves several cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Rosary and visitation will be held at 7pm Wednesday, February 26th at Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith. Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10am Thursday, February 27th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment to be held at Calvary Cemetery in Fort Smith.
