

Richard Allen Bennett, 82, entered his eternal rest on February 22, 2018 at his home in Shawnee, OK. He was born to Peter Ousley and Elizabeth Francis (Saacke) Bennett on February 27, 1935 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Richard retired from the United States Army after 25 years of service. He served in Korea, Alaska, Turkey, Germany, and Vietnam. During his service, he was a Warrant and Supply Officer, an MP, and an Intelligence Officer. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a charter member of Butterfield
Assembly of God in Van Buren, Arkansas and a loyal member of Liberty Baptist Church in Shawnee. He was a dedicated gardener, a much loved father and grandfather to many.
Richard was always ready to step up and help whenever he could and continued his life of service for many years in Shawnee. Rain or shine, he and his beloved dog, Stanley would deliver Meals on Wheels together. His kindness and generosity will be long remembered by many. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ronald P.; his sister, Katherine K.; and his first wife, Hattie Ellen Tackett.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his brother, David Bennett of Davenport, Iowa; four step children and their families, Jerry and Marilyn Whorton, of Russellville, Arkansas, Melody and Michael Hobbs of Bowlegs, Oklahoma, Melinda and Al Alizadeh-Fard, of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Miles and Heather Underwood, of Wilmington, North Carolina; as well as three nephews and their families, Randy, Richard, and Mark Bennett, of Davenport, Iowa. Richard also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved him dearly.
Funeral Service with full military honors will be Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at 2:00 P.M. at the U.S. National Cemetery Pavilion, 522 Garland Avenue in Fort Smith with burial to follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith.
Viewing will be Monday from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Tuesday from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the Funeral Home.
Richard’s life will be celebrated at a future memorial service to be held at Liberty Baptist Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
