

Stanley Hugh Cate, 92, of Fort Smith AR, passed away on Friday, November 8th, 2024. He was born on May 11th, 1932, in the Fayetteville, AR area to the late Harold Cate and Elaine Guilliams Cate. Stan, as he was known, graduated from Fort Smith high school in 1950. He received both his BSE and Master’s degrees from the University of Arkansas, where he met and married his wife, Martha. Stan taught band in West Fork while still attending the U of A. He was the band director in Booneville, Arkansas from 1955 to 1958, and then was hired into the Fort Smith public schools as the band director at Darby Junior High. He taught at Darby from 1958 to 1963, when he became the inaugural band director of Southside High School when it opened in 1963 and remained the director there until he retired in 1993.
He was a member of the Arkansas Bandmaster’s Association, Arkansas School Band and Orchestra association (past president), American School Band Directors’ Association, National Band Association (state chairman), Phi Beta Mu, Symphonia Fraternity (Alpha Omicron Chapter), Sebastian County Parks Board (chairman), and First United Methodist Church Youth Choir (member of the board).
Awards include: the Golden Apple Award, Teacher of the Year, the Classic Arkansas Band Director Award, Spirit of Fort Smith, Outstanding Music Educator Award, SHS Band Ring of Honor, and Arkansas Bandmasters Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Martha Berry Cate, two daughters, Sharla Cameron (Gary) and Cindi Clevenger (David), a son Stanley H. (Skip) Cate (Laura), and a sister, Charlotte Saxon. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Betty Andrews.
Stan leaves a legacy of eight grandchildren, Brittany Rodden (Jack), Megan Bagley (Matt), Kirstyn Reynolds (John), Candi Williams (Case), Christi Clevenger, Cody Clevenger (Ebby), Alex Cate (Christine), and Sarah Dominick (Andrew), and 16 great grandchildren: Lucas, Sadie, Evey, Ayden, Danielle, Colton, Hunter, Dixie, Liberty, Jovie, Christopher, Jason, Charlotte, Walt, Luke, Chloe.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday, November 15th, 2024, at Edwards Funeral Home of Fort Smith. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:30 PM Saturday, November 16th, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church of Fort Smith. Private interment will be at Oak Cemetery.
