Martha-so glad my sister Sybil and I got to come up and stay with you  and Stan when we went up to the university to see daddy’s pictures and memorabilia. He and mom spoke of you so many times over the years and I knew we had to meet one day. All those memories you and Stan shared were so precious to us and I am glad of all the wonderful associations they had with you and Stan not only while at U of A but for decades afterwards. God bless you!!!

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Cate was one of the best. I was never the best player in band but I worked real hard. My senior year I was finally going to get my first year letter. I was so excited. I will never forget sitting there at the picnic as Mr. Cate called out all those who were receiving their first year letters. My name wasn't called. I was horrified and so disappointed. The 2nd year letters were being called and still my name wasn't called out. I thought well I guess I messed up somewhere. Then Mr. Cate began calling out those who had lettered for the 3rd year in a row. All of the sudden he said my name. I cautiously walked to the front to receive an award and Mr. Cate smiled and winked. That moment meant so much. The kindness and acknowledgment that he displayed was never forgotten. Thank you Mr. Cate.

My prayers are with the entire family and community for the loss of such an inspirational man! Thousands of us hold Mr. Cate responsible for our ongoing relationship to achieving excellence through collaboration with others and with the leadership of someone who demands it. Those lessons go far beyond music, of course, but I'm grateful that I could hold my head up in my college wind ensemble that was full of professionals from the St. Louis area because he brought out the best in me!

Then again, he also got to see the worst of me. I'll never forget him yelling over the bullhorn "Patterson, keep up," as I tried to fly around the outside of one of his infamous pinwheel drills in marching band, shoes lost to the mud, while my 6-ft-something stand mate did tiny steps in the center. 

I’m sorry I can’t be there for his service, but I love to think of him being able to be with all of us as we think of him. Maybe he has a bullhorn and a baton at the ready!

I had Mr.Cate in band. I learned so many things from him that has transfered over in life. Everyone should have a Mr. Cate in their life. Rest easy!

I remember Stan when I was a student at Darby Jr. High. He would walk the halls making sure we students would always walk on the right side of the hall. But most of all, I became friends with him when we taught together at Southside High.  He and Martha helped Betty Lue and I adjust to our my first job and to our two new-borns. They were and have been for many, many years super people and friends. When we celebrated our 50th anniversary, they were two that we wanted to spend some time with. 
What a wonderful man who helped uncountable number of high school students become men and women. Thank you STAN for your wonderful life

A lovely man who gave so much to so many through his years in education.   My condolences to Martha and the family.

Mrs, Cate and family,
I am deeply saddened to learn of Mr. Cate’s death. (Even at my age, I cannot bring myself to call him Stan or you Martha). 
Although I (and Ron) attended Northside, we had many opportunities to interact with Mr. Cate. I even remember at least one time—maybe more—when he came to Northside to rehearse our band. As a student, I looked up to him and he was very kind.   After graduation and when Ron was the band director in Van Buren for 10 years, we (especially Ron) had the opportunity to know him as an adult and colleague. He and Mr. Shaver were valuable mentors to Ron in his early years as a director. For me, he was a friend who was always  gracious and upbeat— happy to see me and say a kind word. 
I am sorry I will not be able to attend his service but please know you and your family will be in my prayers.

Mr. Cate.was one of the reasons I have had a career as a horn player and teacher.  I have enjoyed a lifelong love of the horn.  I will

Stan influenced many band directors in our State! He was always willing to help band directors. 
Joey and I have so many fond memories throughout the many years we have known the Cate Family. And, Martha is an amazing women! 
We appreciate the whole Cate Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you, as Stan enters the Kingdom of Heaven. He joins many band directors in the Heavenly band under Gabriel' s direction. Hugs to All, Joey and Kandi Croom

He and the late Bill Shaver who was director of the Northside Band during most of the same years that Mr Cate was at Southside.  The two of them put both Fort Smith high school bands on the map.  The U of A band gave many a scholarship to band students just because of who their band director was at that time.

Such a wonderful man who helped many kids nurture their love of music. 💕♥️
