

He was born in Gainesville, Florida, on May 20, 1965, son of the late William and Marion Griggs. He is survived by his beloved spouse, Michelle Griggs. In addition, he is survived by his pride and joys, two daughters Anna Griggs (Josh) and Emma Griggs. His stepchildren, Alesha O’Neal (Travis), Candace Harris (Dillon) and Dillan Ryan (Kendra)] - and their families - brought him immeasurable joy. He was known as “Gwampa” to eight grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Billy was cherished by his sister, Sarah Chase (Joe) and brother, Charles Griggs (Paula) and host of nieces and nephews: James, Elizabeth, David, John, Elise, and Creighton. Billy’s bonus family - stepmother, Suzee Griggs, stepbrothers, Jon James (Laura) and Joel James - mourn his passing too. Aunts - Barbara Friend, and Frances Kemp - share the loss, as well as cousins: Beth, Jay, and Hillary.
Bill served in the United States Army as a SP4, Supply Specialist in Germany. After his service, he attended college and earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the Ozarks in 1991. Upon graduation, Bill entered the workforce as a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch. He furthered his education by attending the University of Arkansas School of law, earning a degree of Juris Doctor in 1997.
A champion of the underserved, Bill worked as a public defender and child support enforcement attorney, and in private practice where he focused on criminal defense. He sought justice for clients he felt needed a helping hand. His kindness, humor, and generosity were noted by so many.
He enjoyed spending time with his precious family, serving as grill-master at family cookouts, brewing the perfect cup of espresso, playing the guitar, and singing, and researching everything under the sun or participating in rousing political debates with friends. He could argue with the best and was never at a loss for words.
A visitation will be held at 10:00 AM and memorial service at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 2, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 4100 Grand Avenue, Fort Smith, Arkansas. Services and cremation are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
