Willie Mae was born into a sharecropper family that worked in the cotton fields of Louisiana during the Great Depression. Later, her family moved to Arkansas and she graduated from Waldron High School in 1950. Willie Mae and her surviving husband lived a quiet life of hard work, a life pleasing to God that won the respect of others. She joined Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1953 and enjoyed working with all of her supervisors and fellow employees for over 40 years – perfect attendance. She became a member of First Baptist Church of Fort Smith in 1955 and retained her membership until her death. She met her husband while he served in the U.S. Army in 1957 and was married on April 30, 1960. They celebrated their 61st anniversary in 2021.
Willie Mae had the gift of charity. She was wholly devoted to the Lord, her family, and many charities that she loved to share a blessing. Willie Mae loved family gatherings, spending time with her grandchildren, cooking for them and sharing a funny joke. She also enjoyed attending the musical performances of Branson, MO. In January 2019, she moved to RiverLodge Assisted Living in Mountain Home, along with her husband, to be closer to her son. During the next three years, she spent her time reading her bible, getting closer to the Lord and enjoying country and gospel music in her room. Willie Mae passed away from complications associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis at Hospice of the Ozarks. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to all the nurses who served Willie Mae during her final days.
