Bernie served in the US Army for two years, and spent most of that time working in the Pentagon. He was stationed at Eniwetok Atoll Island in 1952, when the H bomb was detonated. He retired from American Hoist and Hercules Machinery in 1998 as a systems analyst and parts manager. In his spare time, Bernie enjoyed fishing, reading, gardening and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sandie Barnes; son, Tim Barnes; grandchildren, Charlotte and Hannah Barnes. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles, and Barbara Barnes Thrasher.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, March 5, 2021 at D.O. McComb and Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home (1320 East Dupont Road, Fort Wayne). Visitation will be held from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm prior to the funeral. Burial will take place in Covington Memorial Gardens, Fort Wayne.
Memorial contributions in Bernie's honor may be directed to the American Heart Association, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
