
Betsy began working at Racer’s Bakery (a family-owned business in Montpelier, IN) at the age of 10. Betsy graduated from Montpelier High School as class president in 1957. In 1962 she received her Bachelor of Science from Ball State University in Education followed by her Master of Arts in Education in 1967.
A second-generation educator, Betsy taught English at Montpelier High School for several years before teaching at Knightstown High School and Whiteland High School. She directed class plays and operettas and also sponsored the high school newspaper, along with counseling and inspiring students. Later, Betsy worked at Washington House Detox Center and was an outspoken advocate for and a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. She also worked at Lyall Electric before her position at Parkview Health in admissions, where she retired. A lover of words, Betsy's most cherished pastimes were reading and sharing thoughtful book discussions with friends. She also loved to listen to the Komets on the radio and loved watching the Kentucky Derby, The Indy 500, The incredible Dr. Pol and The Voice on television. Betsy was a regular attendee of Fellowship Missionary Church since 2013. She was a born-again Christian and attended several Bible studies through her church.
Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, Maurice W. Racer, and Erie Jane Purciful Racer, Her husband; Thomas Parker who passed on in 1992, and her brother William M Racer, who passed on in 2015. She was also welcomed into heaven by her treasured friends, Christa Mohr, Tina Mohr and Sandy Polaski. Betsy leaves to cherish her memory: her beautiful cat Roxy Louise, two nieces and two nephews; Jill Racer Lewis (Tim Smith) of Yorktown; Ann Racer Allen of Nashville (husband Mark), Jack Racer of Selma (wife Sandra) and Andrew Racer of Yorktown. She also leaves behind eight Great Grandnieces and Grandnephews, Four Great Great Grandnephews, and one Great Great Grandniece. Betsy also leaves behind several cherished & lasting friendships, including Jan Mitchel, Anni Hull, Mary Doan, Janice Herr and Linda Mohr and Sandy Setty.
Services will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023 with visitation from 11:30am to 1:30pm and funeral service to follow at D.O McComb & Sons Funeral Homes-Maplewood Park; 4017 Maplecrest Rd. in Ft Wayne, IN 46815.
