Thanks to my mom for writing a guestbook entry. She meant to say "Hoagland". But Mr. Lee was someone I could always call and talk to far beyond elementary school, and he came to my high school graduation and surprised me.  Not enough can be said about this man. I hope many more people provide entries to share with the his family. He is in heaven now and is excited to meet God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, his savior, explore the galaxies and the place He prepared for Mr. Lee. But the family is missing him I am sure. Shower them with all memories and sentiments that he gave to all who knew him. God Bless You for doing it.

Mr. Lee has been on my mind since I heard last week of his passing, and finally I am compelled to write.  I was another of his students in his first year at Hoagland; my memories are of the way he introduced us to the Space Program, and of the genuinely kind and caring way he taught and treated all of us.  I am in tears and this was over 50 years ago.  God Bless you, his family, in your mourning; and thank God for all of our memories.

Hello Everyone, On behalf of my mother and myself, I would like to Thank each of you for taking the time to write. I gives us comfort & joy to know that Cal touched so many of you.

We enjoyed the stories that you have shared here and , again, greatly appreciate your thoughts!

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.  May your memories bring you comfort.

Mr. Lee always made each of his students feel special. He treated us like little adults. He wanted to hear what we had to say. We were all important to him. We were loved by him. He talked to us about anything and everything. He taught from his heart as well as from books. He was a Teacher among teachers. One of a kind. And we loved him.

Mr. Lee was a tremendous teacher. He made the dumb feel smart and the ugly feel beautiful. Thank you for your great example.

I was very lucky to have had Mr Lee for my teacher. Will always remember him. RIP. Prayers to the family.

Reading all the entries Mr. Lee inspired many many people.  He inspired me along with my father who also had Mr Lee to love and appreciate the outdoors. He taught our class about recycle with a plastic bag and a paper bag and how much each deteriorated over time.  He taught many things on nature trips and how to identify some birds and thats the year I learned about kill dear and red-winged black birds. Thanks for teaching and inspiring so many.  My sympathy to all his family and I say cheers to a great man.

Mr. Lee was a gifted teacher and a wonderful person. He helped inspire my lifelong interest in science and medicine. Some memories from his 5th grade class, 1965-66: Chopper the alligator, learning to square dance, stories about Alaska, and Mr. Lee's kindness. The world is a better place because of his influence! My sympathy to the Lee family.

My Lee was the reason I became interested in science.  He was such a huge influence on me.  Even today working in a hospital lab I can relate things I learned from him to what I do.  I felt priveledged to be able to  clean the tanks of mice for the snakes.  He was a great man and exceptional teacher.  Thank you so much for sharing him with all of us.  My prayers are with you all and in your celebration of his life.

My sincere condolences to the Lee family for your loss. Mr. Lee was my favorite teacher, a wonderful human being, and a true Renaissance man! He will truly be missed. RIP Mr. Lee.

I was a student in his class, the first year of his teaching at Hoagland, and what a year it was. The stories about Alaska, teaching the whole class how to play chess and when he notice that we just couldn't concentrate, we would head out to the ball field for awhile. He is the reason I love history today.

I was a student of Mr. Lee's.  I was just telling the children about chopper just last week.  He was awesome.  I am so sorry for your loss.

Wonderful teacher! My condolences to his family. Beautiful to know how many lives he positively impacted.

No other educator left as lasting of an impression upon me as did Mr. Lee.  The impact of his passion for teaching and his love of science are recognizable in my life to this day.  Even as a young child, I was able to recognize him as a man of exceptional character, a person who stood out above the rest. I will always have great respect for Mr. Lee and will always be thankful for how he touched my life.  May he rest in peace.

I hope it is okay to share my memorial that I wrote on Facebook, as it expresses what I want to say the best I can right now. 

The world lost one of its shining lights this past Wednesday. Calvin Lee was the greatest teacher I ever had (my mom and older sister both had him too, and they concur)and was probably the biggest influence on my decision to become a teacher. He was kind, fair, loving, fatherly, and passionate about learning and us, his kids. We stayed close through high school, and he often came out and watched me run some of my big Saturday races.

Weirdly, out of nowhere and after 20+ years since last talking to him, I was inspired to write and thank him for all he meant to me a few weeks back, so I know he knew what he meant to me. That gives me some peace.

Heaven just got a big part of my heart this week...Love to his wife Donna and his sons and family.

Cal and Donna were my next door neighbors for 10 years. Cal was such a special human being. We would sit for hours in his backyard talking and watching hummingbirds. He told me all about his life and I had tremendous respect for him, I am so sad that he is gone. I tried to go see him several times in the last year but each time I tried he was not home. Both Emma and Simone loved him dearly. i will miss him. He was definitely one of a kind. RIP Cal, i will always remember your kindness

My deepest sympathy to the Lee Family. I feel very blessed to have been one of his students....  he sure knew how to make learning interesting,  inspiring and fun.

What an honor to have been taught by, "Mr. Lee."  He was a wonderful example of all that is good and right in the world of education.  His name came to my mind a few days ago, and I recalled the classroom that I always looked forward to entering.  Thank you Mr. Lee.  Your life was well spent.  My condolences to the Lee family for your loss.  You will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

I, too, had the privilege of being one of Mr. Lee's students and remember vividly he being a finalist for the teacher in space program. He had such a passion for what he did and it was always an adventure going to school. I don't ever remember not wanting to go to school, because his class was so much fun. He brought so much to the classroom besides the traditional education. I remember he would pay us for bringing in mice (a quarter for dead ones and fifty cents for live ones) to feed to the snakes, Beauregard and Zanus! I know our bus drivers would cringe every time we got on the bus with mice. But most importantly, I remember the time he told us about how he didn't go to college to be a teacher until he was in his 30's and never let anything stand in your way of doing what you love. That stayed with me, and I went back to school at 24, after some indecisive years, and became a teacher. I have written papers in college about his influence, and last Friday I was actually telling my 1st period senior class about Mr. Lee's influence on my decision to become a teacher later in life. He touched so many lives and his legacy will always live on in the countless students he impacted over his career as a teacher. Thank you Mr. Lee for making school so much more than school and for reminding us all to go after what we love! You will never be forgotten!

Mr. Lee is in the top of people that had big positive influences in my life. An amazing teacher & good human. I loved stopping at Hakes to get Chopper's food for him. I remember the switch from Pepsi, the slides from army days in Alaska, him cracking on his "rug", and all the great stuff that came with being in his class. I'm sorry for your loss. You all are in my thoughts & prayers.

I had the privilege of being one of his students. He was an amazing, funny, and wonderful teacher. I have fond memories of him as my teacher my 5th grade year. My condolences to his wife and family.

Best teacher EVER! I remember 4th grade with him like it was yesterday. My family got picked to keep the guinea pig that summer (awesome) my dad made a big new wooden cage for it, we played with it out in the back yard all summer. I never would have been able to talk my parents into a guinea pig for myself- but since it was Mr. Lee's, it was ok.  Thanks for sharing him with all of us, he was an amazing man that left an impression on the hearts of thousands of kids. So Sorry for your loss.

Mr. Lee used to pull my "lucky ponytail" to get snow days... And he made it ok and part of life for a boa constrictor to eat a mouse... He was just thee best teacher I've ever had and will never forget. Prayer for comfort to your family Mr. Lee, you are, no doubt, in a better place

Sending my deepest condulences. Mr.Lee truly touched the lives of his students. To this day I still remember things he would tells us and how much fun he was. He was the type of teacher you wanted to do your best for! He was an outstanding person! Heaven gained an angel!

I had the honor of knowing Cal Lee as a colleague. I was a resource teacher at Hoagland when he taught sixth grade. He was a wonderful teacher and man. His infectious smile will be missed. So sorry for your loss Lee family.

My sympathy to Mr. Lees family. He was such a sweet man. I had the honor of being a student of his. He had a way of making learning fun and exciting.

My husband Jason Myers (Mr. Lee's 6th grade 85-86) and myself (Mr. Lee's 6th grade 86-87) were just reminiscing about Mr. Lee on the anniversary of the Challenger accident. There have been countless times that we've referred to him when talking about school experiences. All three of our children attended Hoagland and we've told them about Chopper who was on display with the ever watching owl. Mr. Lee's slides of his Africa trip were such a treat to listen to him narrate. Such an extraordinary man that took us on amazing adventures. Rest easy Mr. Lee

Cal was a cousin and he was also my 6 th grade teacher. So many memories. He gave us our first Guinea pig named Mama Seta. Cal you will be missed. sending prayers to Donna and the boys and their families.
